I had a 5M-TE I made out of an old MTEU engine and a 5ME...
How much power as to how much power it can makes comes down to what is done to it...
I had a stock 5me bottom end an O ringed block t3 turbo off a vl commodore that had been hi flowed (Not sure of the exact specs) FMIC and aftermarket fuel injection with 440cc injectors... The car got 215 odd hp at the wheels

Well it all depends on what else you have done to the car... I can tell you that anything approaching 200hp at the wheels on a MA61 you will have MAJOR traction issues.
Whilst i went for a 1jzgte for reasons of driveability etc. I found that the biggest hurdle was never the power but just getting that power to the ground without flying all over the road.
But if you can get the power to the ground a 5MTE powered ma61 can easily dispach stock WRX's and the like
To give you an idea an MA61 with a 1jzgte with just exauhst mods yields around 220-230hp at the wheels

Bah, I have 240hp at the wheels, and I have no traction issues, unless I decide to.
And I only have 205 width tyres too.
Now, come the rain, its a different story, but MAXXIS tyres aren't really known for their wet weather grip

Amen to that. Wet roads plus 200+hp = undie changing experiences in most cases.

Atleast you guys have IRS which sags a little and takes up some tourque. Try driving a live rear end with only an 1' of travel with a nice tight Limo in the wet.
what makes it harder is the Bus size steering wheel and the 5 turns Lock to Lock
The Wagon only has 150rwhp. Mind you I will give you that your turbo's will add to the wet undies to. N/A power would be a little easier to drive.

I have 305hp at the wheels with a buttload of torque, and likewise I have no traction problems with decent quality tyres unless I'm really pushing it.
At the moment I have shithouse tyres on the back though, and it's wheelspin city! Tyres make all the difference.

If you can find a good 5mge or 6mge, its a worth while upgrade.
Converting to manual as well will increase driveability and fun through the roof (that is if its currently auto)
That said, if you can find a 7mge, with loom and ecu for a good price, do it.
Just make sure you get everything (after, coil, ignitor etc)

A shitty 5mge will prolly put out more power than a good 5me any day anyway.
Decide what you want with the car, and how much you want to spend.
If you decide you want the car for at least a few years, and you don't mind spending about 10k, get a 1jz/2jz/1uz

7mgte + FMIC + zorst + new clutch + bits and bobs.
Umm, prolly $3k ontop of the purchase of the motor, wiring, and ecu.
Depends how cheap you get stuff.
