my mate chucked his alpine headunit in his glovebox. fits ok, but a pita to have to keep opening and closing the lid to access the buttons.

id just make a bracket, sit it under the dash.

I've fitted a head unit into the centre console on a KE55. It had the am/fm radio in the dash with a seperate tape deck in the console. I just removed the tape deck and filed/cut the opening out to fit the head unit. Pretty easy and neat fit.

Good luck

people will say many things, and will often be wrong...

take out a screwdriver, pull out old deck, and measure the space left compared to a new deck.

not that hard, but means you need to go outside Wink Very Happy
just be happy it's not a KE10.. you can only fit a 5-8cm depth deck.

Re: Where to put head unit in ke35? Tue, 09 November 2004 04:49 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Ok.. Couple of options here (case of been there, done/doing that again for me.)

1. Mount it where the old AM radio came from. It WILL fit, but you have to butcher up the dash. Most new head units come with a metal mounting bracket that you will have to line up with the space left from the old radio.

What you do is cut out the hole (once aligned), then slide the bracket in and bend all the right bits of it. Basically you entire stereo is held in place by this bracket, no screws. Work well and if done properly looks smick-o. Smile

2. Mount it where your old tape player was. As mentioned, you'll have to remove some of the plastic surround on the center console, but this can quite often be an easier task that squeezing it into the dash. It is also down a bit low and can be a bit of trouble to change stations whilst driving (big no-no anyway. Razz )

3. Mount it in the glovebox. Not my preferred option, I like to show off my handy work/hard earned $'s. It will fit though, been done before. Wiring isn't really a problem here, but you'll pretty much ruin the glovebox for normal use ever again.. Mounting holes, wire holes, they all can't really be repaired, they can be patched but look crap. Razz

Hope that helped you out.

In my opinion, the dash mounted options looks the best and is about the middle-difficulty. The hardest bit is making sure you align it right the first time. As they say, measure twice, cut once. Smile

If you put it in the glove box, i would be getting a deck with remote. I have a Pioneer unit which sits comfortably in the glove box of my corona, the remote makes easy work of changing channels / songs etc. Without it i'd probably end up crashing, trying to lean over there. I couldnt bare hacking up my nice looking dash, the am radio looks so old school! Cool

As stewart said, get a spare glovebox and don't even bother with those morons at autobarn etc... they'll just make a mess behind the dash.

Cheers

The old speaker covers should fit fine, just don't get any speakers with fixed grills on them (some do for some reason...).

RE: Remote - you could also get a HU with a wired remote control, that fits to the steering wheel.. I think Sony used to make some, maybe it was Pioneer.. Confused

RE: Pro. wiring/installation - take it to a REAL car audio store. Those little speciality shops that ONLY deal with car/marine audio. If they only do one thing, they have to do it well to stay in business, or at least that's my opinion. If you buy the stuff from them as well, they usually offer free/cheap installation.

Get a spare glovebox so if you want to restore your car to original condition you wont have a gaping big hole in the glovebox.

Wiring - I agree with gr8r-x, Go to a car audio specialist. (This does not include Strathfield Smile ... THEY ARE MORONS TOO!)

Sorry, but i've had to repair a couple of bad wiring jobs by them at work, and in the backyard Mad

Ah ok cool thanks guys, if it lines up where the old tape deck is it might be ok, when i need to sell it i will stick tha old tape deck back in it, that might be a cheaper option, i dont really want to butcher my dash,
any one know what good audio equipment is, im a newbie at car audio, i thought maybe pioneer or some thing like that,

Basically, $'s = quality.. If you see 2 almost identical HU's with about $200 diff, you know something is missing.. Be it parts quality, assembly, checking, there is something that the other company has cut out to reduce costs.

I'm not saying to go and spend a couple of thou on a HU, just stick with a brand name and get something you like that will do the job, along with all the features you need..

Just make up a checklist when you go shopping so that you make sure you get everything you want out of it, ie. pre-outs (how many, 1/2/3?), mp3 support, cdrw reading, etc, etc.

Hey Brad

just dont butcher that dash !! that car is freaking mint !!! - if u want, go 2 a wrecker and get the surrounding dash from another ke35 and butcher that to suit a new head deck, and keep ure stock one and the radio - store away somewhere safe!

Also, DONT go chopping up those door trims for new speakers... !

people who have not seen the pics of this car... this thing should be in a museum. Really.

any new speakers you try to put into the rear parcel probably wont fit. the stock papercone ones are 5 by 7's, so you will probably have trouble finding them. i just cut larger holes in mine, and put 6by9's in them. does require slight "massaging" of the metal supports. Leave your stock stereo in the dash (less chance of someone breaking in) and make a cradle for the stereo in the glovebox. i fibreglassed the outside of the box, made a simple wooden bracket and bolted it in, works a treat.

try www.hot4s.com.au ......

there is fuckall to wiring up a head unit, you could even read the instructions you get with it perhaps! go to a store and have a look at the units and instructions and go from there... it's really not as hard as you are making it out to be...

Hey Brad i just wired up a head unit in my 35. I just put it where the tape deck was as it was piss easy to do and having it in the glove box (my original idea) was way to unpractical as its not remote. All controls are easy to find whilst driving and i reckon it looks good as well. I also thought about mounting 6x9s under the factory toyo speaker covers but there isnt enough clearance between the fuel tank and the parcel shelf for that. So at the moment i havent got any further and my head unit is wired to the factory speakers so I at least have something ( they actually have superb sound reproduction up to about 18 volume level ). I figure If I was ever going to show my rolla as a concourse vehicle I could always buy a new center and stick the old tape deck back in.

anyway Ill get those pics to you when i have the time. André

good idea on the mdf, wish i'd done that. i ended up taking the shelf out and bending the supports. brad, theres no reason you cant put it in yourself, its not rocket science. They design the manual so the dooshbags at autobahn can work out what to do...
