erratic idle

my 2T is idleing kinda strange, it moves between ~600 and 1500rpm, even when warm. im pretty sure the mixture is fucked, but until i get my hands on a vacuum guage is there any way i can get this fairly right?
playing with the idle speed screw just makes the average speed slower or faster, it still rises and falls. it does have a lumpy cam, but it didnt used to do this. the PCV valve is connected, and assuming there aren't any air leaks, what else could it be?
thanks dudes.

same problem here. just that mine went to the extend where ingine died!! i have lumpy cams as well.
What i did is advanced ignition timing and increse idle screw. So instead of dying with idling around 500-1000, revs move at 1000-1400.
Not a solution, just damage control. Let me know what was wrong.

btw, my problem is suspected to be the shims. Urs might not have shims but it could be the valves not closing properly or something like that.
just an idea.

ive had the same problem here for the last 3 months.
just one day it started doing it... ive changed carby and manifold gaskets....all hoses nothing leaks.
i suspect burnt valve seat.
did comp test and all was fine so i dont think head gasket.
just cant justify spending money on that when i plan a 4age swap in the next 2-3 months.
i temp fixed mine like bigben sept its a biatch in the morning ... gotta keep the revs up for 5-10mins (read: no choke).
Hope this helps
Cheers
Nathan

i raised the idle to about 1000rpm to keep it alive, then leaned out the mixture (it was mega rich), which brought the idle up to 1200rpm, then dropped it back to 600rpm, gave it a few more degrees of advance, and there she stays, burping away just between 500 and 700 rpm.
figure it was a combination of too much fuel and not enough idle speed.
