Supercharging a Diesel Tue, 09 November 2004 09:03 Go to next message
Hi guys,

I'm looking for a bit more power for my diesel hilux and am thinking supercharging may be an alternative to a turbo.

The big attraction to me is the lack of turbo lag as I mostly drive between 1 and 3 k rpm and having a turbo that only provides useable power for half of that rev range would be pretty silly.

This is how I would *like* it to work:
1. it should generally be on except when idling.
2. I would like a manual disengage for use in traffic etc, and just whenever it's not really needed.
3. I would also like an 'always on' option as well for extra torque idling along in some offroad situations. I understand though that the power needed to turn the SC may stall the motor?

Parts 2 & 3 above aren't really necessary, so I'd skip them if they were going to be too difficult.

So will the intake plumbing be more complicated if it is to be switched on only when needed?

I am not looking for a huge power increase, all I really want is to be able to cruise comfortably at 105 km! I was thinking of having it setup so that it makes about 6 psi boost at 3000 engine RPM. I'm not sure if this will give me usable boost at low RPM though.

How hard/expensive is it to get pulleys etc custom made?

Can someone give me some info or links on the SC12/14 used in non-standard installs?

Cheers,
Benno

yeah I read it!

I guess what I need to know isn't really diesel specific but just how to set up the SC in a non standard configuration - intake plumbing, right RPM for the SC, wiring, and whether it is actually an alternative to a turbo.

Cheers,
Benno

I have driven a few supercharged diesel hiluxes and was dissappointed every time. The standard diesel (NA) felt faster than a couple of them.
I think you would be far better off trying to research a QUALITY turbo kit that has fuel pump mods tied in as a part of the kit. With a diesel, the fuel pump and its fuel curve should be matched to the airflow curve of the turbo to achieve the best results.
With a GOOD turbo kit, you shouldn't lose any bottom end power, as the turbo isn't drawing power from the engine to turn.

Yeah that was my thread.
If its an old diesel with only the mechanical pump, you won't be able to do 2 & 3 as the tuning capability for the injector pump isn't there.
ie it needs to be tuned for specific set of parameters
