Opinions of 1GGTE Mon, 07 October 2002 13:13 Go to next message
Hey,

I am considering putting a 1GGTE into an '87 Corona Avante.

What are people's opinions of these engines?
What price should I be looking at for one?
Are spare parts available?
When does boost come on and does it hold to redline?
Are there any wiring diagrams available or any good sites with info on this engine?

Thanks a lot, apologies for the stack of questions.
Alex

Alex,

I think most will agree that, for the money, these are a fantastic engine. The downside is the availability of good engines are few and far between. I believe SSS Automotive still have them in stock and these sell for $1500 (but don't quote me on that).

Spare parts are usually easily obtainable both second hand and new. I believe there are wiring diagrams available on the net or else I sell EFI packages that contain diagrams in addition to extracts from the EFI sections of 1G manual.

As for details on boost and redline someone else may want to comment as it's been a while since I drove a 1GGTE. As another option though you might like to consider the 1JZGTE. These are not that much more expensive than the 1GGTE, considerably more power and easier to find in good condition.

The 1JZ-GTE, while being a MUCH better engine, is also 25kg heavier and will do bad things to the handling...

It really depends on if you (honestly) want a great car in a straight line, OR a good car in a straight line and around corners.

As for the 1G-GTE, I'm not sure when the boost comes on (my tacho doesn't work) but it starts from real low and goes on all the way to the 7,200rpm cut out.

Lovely engine.

Have a talk to Abes/Assailant. He's got a couple of 1G-GTE Coronas.

AH, just drop in a 1g, convert it to single turbo, boost the shit up and run like the clappers

Hey,

Thanks for the comments ...

How much heavier is the 1JZ-GTE than the 1G-GTE anyway? It couldn't be more than 40-50 kg surely?
Given that the Avante's weigh 1140 kg anyway.

I have heard that they are difficult to fit also, given that I'd be doing the majority of work myself.

Didn't read my post did ya? Razz
The 1JZ-GTE is approximately 25kg-30kg heavier than the 1G-GTE. This in on the extreme front of the car so you'd better like understeer....

The 1JZ requires quite a bit of work to get it to fit. The 1G is tight enough. Have a look at some pix of my engine bay (yours should be pretty much identical to mine).

The 1JZ will require the moving of the radiator forward...

Would that extra weight really affect handling all that much. Most of the weigh should be behind or on the front axle line. And besides. That extra weigh is only the diffence between a small guy and a large guy. I might be wrong but i cant see it making a big difference.

It's up to you dude... Smile

Most of the extra weight is actually before the axle... That's where the extra length is...

25kg may not seem like much, but it is when it's in front of the axle...
