understanding suspension for my ra40 Wed, 10 November 2004 12:38 Go to next message
If i am understanding what i am reading correctly, is it perfectly plausible to use the shockers out of an AE86 and put them in a RA40?
I want to putfully adjustable suspension in my RA40 (with the corona strut upgrade done to it). Rob has already helped me out a fair bit with this already (and a legend he is).
but trying to understand this for myself i have come to 2 conclusions.
As the shock absorber is separate to the spring, i could get a shock absorber for an AE86 as they seem to be easier to get parts for, and they seem to be the same one as used in the RA40 according to the KONI catalogue. I can then get separate RA40 springs because they have a different code to the AE86. combine them together to get adjustable ride feel but nt height.
then as money permits, i could get an adjustable coil over kit down the track but still retain the shock absorber due to the parts being seperate, combining the absorber and coil over kit for a fully adjustable ride.
Am i understanding this correctly or is the coil over kit a completely different kettle of fish to a spring/absorber assembly.
do I understand right, am i on the right track or am i barking up the wrong tree?
cheers
Damien

coil-over in an RA40 would require:
-removing lower spring seat from front strut assembly
-welding on threaded section for lower (and adjustable) spring seat
-new upper spring seat

this is all do-able but not without significant cost.

most folks with RA40's (self included) tend to restrict suspension enhancement to:
-nolethene bushes (or similar)
-better shock inserts (for the front) and shocks for the back
-better (usually lower or different rate) spring for front/back
...and often address the braking capabilities of the front disks

improving rear brakes requires adapting a different diff to the RA40's suspension mounts - again do-able but at significant cost.

are the ae86 inserts for the fronts compatible?
it seems to be the same insert according to KONI if i am reading it correctly.
If that is the case, couldn't i get these so called brilliant Tokico adjustable shocker for an AE86 and fit it to the RA40.
Or is Koni good enough for what i am probably looking for anyway (just something that handles great and sits low, at the moment it feels like i have no suspension at all but i don't know what springs or absorbers are in it.)

If koni list the same part number for the AE86 and the RA40, I'd suggest they would fit hehe.

You mention that you wish to use corona struts, if that's the case then you should make sure that the AE86 shock is compatible with that strut (corona)! (it won't help you that if fits you old RA40 strut if you are using corona ones! Smile)

Also in regards to coil overs, yes you can keep you shock insert. Someone mentioned a place that sold a kit (consisting of the threaded sleeve, top hat and locking rings) for around $120 a side? (maybe it was cheaper charles, I remember that I didn't scoff at the price! and thats me Very Happy)

Cheers

Here's an example of JZX81 struts which have been converted to coilover as mentioned above. Note the spring seat has been cut off and a threaded collar welded in its place. Standard strut inserts are used.
