icon2.gif  Metal head gasgets - 7MGTE Thu, 11 November 2004 00:23 Go to next message
Well it's summer, and my temperature gauge is rising accordingly. I'm thinking I should get my head rebuilt BEFORE it actually blows, and hopefully prevent any further damage to my engine from a BHG.

After snooping around here, it seems quite a few people recommend the HKS metal head gasget, and the ARP head bolts seem to be pretty much standard.

I want to know what head gasgets I should AVOID, as well as other PROVEN head gasgets (preferably metal ones).

I'm also after good places to pick up said head gasgets and bolts, and what I can expect to pay for them.

Thanks guys,

-J-

If you temp guage actually rises in hot weather (and it wasnt just a play on words) then I would be looking at your cooling system.
It should remain in the same position regardless of the ambient temperature.

New thermostat, new water pump, full rad & coolant flush, coolant levels are good... still creaps up in hot weather. Sad

I agree with Cruzida. Check the coolant system first to make sure. Redoing the head is not cheap, and there is a great weight of opinion/expertise that says with the MHG you NEED to deck the block which means engine rebuild. Eye Spin

I pulled the A/C out the other day and found heaps of crap (leaves, feathers etc) between the two !!

I got my studs from a place in the States via EBay, and saved about $50 on the local price.

I posted this info back in august !!

For all those who wish to know.

A mob called Serco in Qld (www.serco.com.au) are now stocking the Cometic MHG that suit the 7M engines.

They currently have in stock the 0.040" (1.0mm) 84mm bore units (7 of them to be exact) at a retail price of $230 + GST, and a trade price of $177 + GST

Anyone interested in a group buy ?

Cheers

I notice your car still has an engine fan, is this still working properly?

When you say "full rad and coolant flush" did you do this yourself? or have it professionally done?

My radiator was only blocked 10%, but it was enough to make my temp guage creep up while I was on the dyno.

If you haven't had the radiator professionally cleaned (not flushed) in the last 6 months, get it done.

They take the top tank off, and individually clean each row.
Costs $80-$100 depending on where you go.

Engine fan is still good as far as I know. Should I look at switching to thermo's, or stick with the old clunker?

As for coolant flush, it was professionally done - but it wasn't a full clean. Just a flush.

And there are also a few tiny creamy coloured deposits under my rad cap (oil, BAD!). I figure these things combined give me a few warning signs of an impending BHG.

As for ARP head bolts - can anyone recommend a place that give good prices for a full set in Sydney?

This is most likely a calcium build up inside the radiator.

It is exactly what needs to be cleaned out as it blocks the radiator tubes.

Take the rad out, give it to a place, get them to open it up and clean it out.

An even better idea.

I was going to do this to my Cressida rad, I had the whole thing ordered and was just waiting for it to arrive, then the guy did the calculations, and because of the design on my end tanks, I was only gonna get a 3% increase in flow with a 3 core.

Sooo, I threw that out the window.

Damn you MA61 ppl and you metal end tanks.

Have you determined what the actual temp is ? Just because a 20 year old digi guage says so, might not mean it actually is ?

Remove the A/C - makes the car lighter as well Laughing ....

Mumblefuckbuggerpoobumnonotyetyoubastard!!!!!!

No, it is not running yet, but the aim is to have it going by Xmas.

I am using the Engine driven fan, and have installed a full shroud (the previous one was cut to buggery) so don't expect an issue with cooling.

I get a new lease car through work every 4 months or so (currently a CDXi Vectra), so why should I wear out my pride and joy Laughing

As an aside, I had a VZ Coupe the other weekend, and went for a blast through the hills (on roads that the Classic Adelaide will be on) and it was a hoot. The car now has some pretty serious grunt and it is quite comfartable, but tends to understeer a little at 80k's on 30kay corners..... Rolling Eyes

Some have used Penrith Toyota, and I heard the price was about $300, and Kristian also has some, and someone else (Andrew Vibert from memory) also piped up.

The Cometic ones are getting good raps in the States.

From what I hear, Rabid Chimp are very good, but the shipping and customs will probably kill it !!!
