who can tell me if this is a series 5 RX7 turbo? Thu, 11 November 2004 00:30 Go to next message
Does anyone know what this turbo is? Is it ball bearing?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&a mp;category=72478&item=4502070336&rd=1& ;ssPageName=WDVW

The seller says it may be high flowed, so can anyone confirm that as well.

I'd be considering for use on a 4agte, instead of the rb20 one i have lying around. I know some people have used 13b turbos. Opinions?

Cheers, Dan

That's a series 4 turbo. The series 5 had a more rounded turbine housing and was twin scroll. They are not bb.

It's a T03 size. Would be good if you are planning on drag racing and don't really care about lag. I had one on my RX3. Did 11's, but even with the massive amount of exhaust flow that rotaries produce, it was laggy as hell.

I think that unless you were building an all-out drag or dyno pig, then you would be hard pressed to find reason to fit a turbo like that to a 4A. There are much more efficient (read: responsive) newer OEM turbos on the second hand market that can make excellent peak & low RPM power, weigh less, have a better wastegate design (over the series 4 at least), and are less prone to exhaust housing cracks.

And no, that turbo on ebay is not high flowed. Mad

Too big for the 4ag. Series 5 turbos have massive exhaust housings, and high-flow ones usually have a back-cut exhaust wheel to allow more top-end flow (and more lag). You can get t04 front covers and compressor wheels for them though, plus a range of turbine optiones. The exhaust housings on the s5 are massive and have a split-pulse divider (the "twin scroll"). Series 4 turbos are known to have some issues with overboosting due to the smaller wastegate.

Yeah, it will be stupidly laggy on a 1.6L engine. Look at the size of the exhaust housing! I have one of these for use on my 18R-G, but even on a 2 litre engine I expect it to be very laggy.

I'm pretty sure the series 4 turbo was twin scroll not series 5. What engine did you have in the RX3? Mine is very responsive in the FC full boost by 3000rpm.

Both the series 4 & 5 have a twin scroll exhaust housing, but only the 5 has the twin wastegate ports, to solve the earlier model's problems with boost control due to the tiny single wastegate.

I've got pictures of both if you need me to post them up. Smile

Cheers
Phil

12A BP. Absolutely screamed in the top-end, but was seriously laggy without the extra exhaust pressure of a 13B.
