Leaky exhaust/turbo manifold?

Hey guys,
Since I'm not too technically minded I thought I'd put this to some of you. I just got my radiator reco-ed and after installing it and bleeding out the air bubbles I noticed smokish type air coming from the exhaust side of the engine. Couldn't pinpoint exactly where its coming from, but its definitely towards the front of the engine kinda down past below the rocker cover seals. Got me worried but after I took the car out for a fang (to test the radiator), got back and popped the bonnet again, the smoke's miraculously disappeared?
Now, I'm definitely sure its smoke and not water vapour. I was looking at it for a good 10 mins to make sure (water vapour would have all evaporated by then considering how hot the exhaust manifold can get). Could it be incomplete sealing between the manifold and the head? Like when it gets heated up enough, the expansion of the metals seal it tightly? I got no idea, any suggestions/comparisons/anything will be appreciated.
Yian
P.S. Ehh... sorry 'bout the read.

If your manifold is leaking it will leave evidence (like some soot) at the area that is leaking - also the sound should be obvious (tick tick).
The smoke may be caused by a little oil on the surface of the manifold - even if you handle it with dirty hands while working on the car it will burn off when you fire it.

Good point about the 'tick tick' noises. My mate had a leaky manifold and it definitely sounded like that. And also I haven't touched the manifold area since I put the engine in, which is around 2 months ago now? Maybe oil is leaking onto it somehow?
Also, car feels really sluggish when its cool. It will boost orite (can hear the induction) but doesnt have the same kick as when its warm. Is that a symptom? Or am I just thinking too much? Forgive my ignorance, but I've only ever owned N/A cars before this.

You are definitely thinking too much.
There are a whole host of reasons why engines run better when they are warm (the term "operating temperature" is apt).
Your turbo car is no different - and indeed your boost response will be affected in part by the oil temp (too cold and viscous) , exhaust gas temp, manifold and turbine housing temp.

Thanks for the help and suggestion thus far, but just then after work I had a look (first time in a while that it's not raining) and there is sooty build-up above the exhaust manifold. When the engine was apart I was the designated cleaner so I made sure the head was spotless. Now, obviously there is a leak, but from the amount of soot build-up I don't think its that big a leak.
Can I just tighten the nuts/bolts on the manifold (provided I can reach them)? Or do I need to take the whole thing off to replace it with a new gasket? Or can I just put a dallop of those brownish gasket goo things and tighten it? Your help has been good so far yellorolla, thanks .
Suggestions or pointers anyone?

Sometimes they leak due to the flange plate being warped.
I suggest taking the manifold off, checking if the flange is flat (we cut my flange plate in half at the Toyota nationals to relieve the stress - it works a treat and we did some driveway machining thanks to Jamie from JT ), clean it, permatex ultra red silicone, tighten firmly and give it a few hours to cure, tighten the rest of the way to F tight.

No worries. Red Silicon it is. Thanx mate.
