TA23 + F312/292 + W55 = what tailshaft? Fri, 12 November 2004 09:48 Go to next message
Question is as per title. Will I need the tailshaft out of the SA63 that I'm grabbing the gearbox from, or will my current tailshaft suffice (out of TA23 with T50/T292).

You'll probably need a custom tailshaft for that combination. An SA63 tailshaft won't fit.

Its possible that a RA65 tailshaft may fit, I don't know its length, but with a W58 gearbox and a F series diff as standard on this model, the spline and flange should fit your W55 and F series diff. The length is the question. Contact CLG on this forum as he has one of these for sale if you are interested.

Yeah - the SA63 is definitely not right (seeing as it supposedly hooks into a T292).

I will bug Mr CLG and do some more measurements now that I have some of the parts on hand.

The 4 bolt flange for the F & T series diffs is the same. At least, it was between my T18 diff & Corona F series when I did the conversion.

Hmmm - depends on the gearbox spline I guess.

I have a RA28 Celica with a W55 and F292 diff.

I use the standard Celica tailshaft that came with the car when it had a 18RC, W50, T series diff.

All fits well except had i had to make the holes around the centre bearing a bit offset as the rear half of the tailshaft was a bit long.

Cheers
Joel

My F292 diff is now in an AE71 corolla, with W55 box. An RT104 corona one piece tailshaft was a good starting point for the conversion, having the correct yokes/unis, and a constant diameter of 3" (no tapers), so it was simple to shorten the required 35mm. Smile

So I just have to find something with a W5x gearbox and an F or T series rear end and shorten it to suit?

Pretty much. There will be automatic toyota gearboxes that share the same spline too, which will open up the list a bit more.

Remember that if the diff tube tapers up to a larger diameter just after each uni (as many toyota 1 piece tailshafts do), then it will be difficult to shorten. Check this out with your local engineer/diff shop before you make a purchase & take it in.
