ae92 gearbox questions Sat, 13 November 2004 09:01 Go to next message
Hey guys, im kinda new to the scene, i got an ae92 corolla seca with a 4afc engine, its to do me for now until i get a new car, so its gonna last me a few years id imaginge. so far i have just a cat back 2" hi flow exhaust on it, coz mine was broked and had lots of holes in it. its currently has an automatic transmission which leads me to my question.

I am wanting to convert it to manual so i was wondering if someone could tell me, how hard it is to do, what do i need, rough price and like i dont know a model or type of gear box i would need? =\ i was thinking of looking for wrecked manual ae92 secas and i figured i could just interchange the parts....

oh also, i would like to change the intake somehow so my car can breath somewhat better than it is now.
Thanks.

-Kim

p.s i have looked around on this board and noticed that anything with the word 4afc or anything besides 4age, 4agze something like that is totally flamed down. I know that the 4afc isnt a really a performace engine. but that is what is in my car and i dont particular want to change that, since i will have another car in a few years which i can waste my money on. so constructive critism please =\

Hi & welcome. I've owned a 4afc Seca for a few years so i'm not gonna flame you Razz

Sorry I can't help you with many details (mine's a manual already) but you'll be looking for a C50 or C52 5 speed gearbox. The C50 comes as standard with the 4afc whereas the C52 is out of the 100kw SX & others and is a bit stronger apparently.

Dunno where you're from but i'll probably have a C50 box available in a couple of weeks.

EDIT: Oops, Perth is a bit far...

yeah you'll probably be better off selling and buying a manual and if you sell the auto to an older person you'll most likely get enough for it to buy a manual with a bit left over considering auto's usually sell for more than manuals.

anyway, good luck.

Kev.

hmm i was just looking through the paper for parts and wrecked cars lol, saw 5 speed gear boxes out of an 1986 rolla apparently for like 100 bucks, though i guess that is the box only and i would need other stuff too, gotta figure out all the parts i would need =\ but yeah how hard would it be to find the model of the gear box, im guessing just a quick inspection would do it? like model printed on it somewhere *shrugs* thanks though guys

anyone done any intake mods for the 4afc engine?

Just remembered this thread I saw a while ago...

Soarer wrote on Mon, 16 February 2004 20:16

Total costs were around the $3k mark, which included everything required to do the conversion: box, pedals, shifter, clutch master/slave & piping...

This was a Soarer conversion & obviously parts are gonna be alot cheaper for a Corolla, but it gives you a basic idea of what you'll need. But in the end, yeah it'll probably be cheaper to buy a manual...

here u go, approx pirces (nb have been drinking all day and last nyt so pls forgive me if i am out)
NB prices are dependant on places and people

clutch $100 trade (daiken HD) that inc diaphragm and bearing
box (i got c50 about $80-150 con dependant) c52 (100-175) c56 (everyone wants this one (150 - 300)
clutch pedal, master, resivor, plumbing and slave (about $50 thru to 200, i got all asides pumbing)
then u gotta figure out the ECU wiring (normally u just disconnect the plugs via a cut with side cutters or but a ECu off me, say $50+)
then gearbox oil about $30
then the fucl off labour time or the self pain that u inflict on yaself....... 4ages with box, ecu loom go for about 500 to 800, may be a worthy investment, but if u need n e thing based on the prices PM me and we can talk

hope it gives u a fair idea
