RA28 wheel size qestions. Sat, 13 November 2004 10:59 Go to next message
hey guys
I am currently restoring a 77 RA28 and am looking at the different wheel size options.
I am mainly after good all round handling, keeping in mind that it has to look smick aswell. The car wont be driving on dirt roads often.standard tyre size is 175/70/15. Currently looking at tyre size of 195/50/16.
i do not want to go to low in the profile beacause of the expense of the tyres. Is this an appropiate size for a RA28 that will give good handling etc?
Any 1 that knows about the handling characteristics of tyre widths and diametre, opinions suggestions and tips would be very helpfull.

Original std tyre size on an RA28 is 165 R 14. They have an overall diameter of about 522mmm. To keep your gearing and speedo close to original you should try to get near the same diameter, so on a 16 inch wheel you want a 205/55 16 or a 205 /50 16 or 225/50 16. Above 225mm you run the risk of your tyres rubbing / fouling the guards or suspension. I sometimes run 225 50 15's on my RA23 and have no rubbing problems.
Tyres alone won't give good handling by themselves, they should be considered as part of your total suspension upgrade. Given that, lower profile is better and some tyres do handle/grip/perform better than others.
Case in point, Goodyear Eagle GA's are a poor tyre, Yoko A539's are much better, by xomparison.
In 1977 Toyota never considered low profile tyres on its cars so its suspension design would only reflect the best tyres available on the day.

By the calculation, the correct original tyre diamter is 626.2mm, so you'll be looking for 205/55/16's, 225/50/16's, or 245/45/16's.

For handling, I'd definataely look at 16" wheels, going higher results in a sidewall ratio that can cause problems with grip and turn in, due to it's reduced ratio.

thanx alot.
i am only 15 and dont know all that much about this kinda stuff, so ur help is very apreciated.
i just thought that if i went to fat in the tyre it would decrease the weight per sq inch resulting in poor traction.I checked the size of the tyres on the car just then and it says p185/75HR14. For a streetcar i thought that 225 would probly be to much? at the moment im looking at 205/50/16.
I have been reading as much as i can on suspension setups etc but due to my lack of knowledge i hardly understand any of it.
If any 1 could supply a website that is easy to understand or explain to me wat suspension upgrades should i do on my RA28 if running tyres 205/50/16

205/50/16 is too small in diameter for an RA28 - it will work but it will throw your speedo out. Use either of the tyre sizes I have mentioned above.

225/50r16 are a common size on performace cars, and are cheaper and easier to get a wide variety in. it is almost exactly the same circumference as a 185/75r14, depending on the brand you get. trust me, it's the best option pricewise and performance-wise. what style of wheels are you looking at? superlites look awesome on any older car in my opinion.

go to www.performancewheels.com.au, and look in the third 'street' page. there the wheels that you'd see all the time on mini's, also known as minilites or watanabes.
