Hi guys,

I read this article http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/portal/alias__carpo intau/tabID__6485/ArticleID__6615/DesktopDefault.a spx

and realised i'm having a few of those problems.

I have a Corolla 1990 AE92 1.6 Carb Manual, I bought this 2nd hand 2 years ago. My car has now done 160k KM

Its been perfect since the day i've had it, apart from the rear struts I had to get replaced to get it road worthied.
But recently i've had some problems. I'm showing some symptoms of an aging corolla and I need to know what
to do.

I've scoured the net for these problems and don't know what parts to get replaced/fixed.

I'm experencing the clicking noise at full lock when turning around a corner, i believe this is coming from the CV
joints, what exactly are these and how much should i be expecting to pay for this to be fixed? do they even need to be replaced or can you just grease them up again?

Also i'm having trouble shifting from 3-2, crunching gears occasionally doing this, and also shrudding when taking
off in first alot, whats causing this to happen?

"Noisy or worn manual gearboxes are now showing up usually because of poor driving. Check the 1-2, 3-2, 4-3
changes for graunching. A clutch that doesn’t engage until the last bite of travel is on its last legs. Broken engine mounts are now showing up with age and quickly generate costly exhaust fractures. "
This is from the carpoint website.

My clutch isn't engaging as well till the last moment, i'm guessing i need a new clutch.

If changing from 3-2 isn't smooth , would replacing the clutch solve the problem or should there be something
else that needs to be done?

Thats the 3 problems i'm having , the rest of the car is perfect (i think)

How much should i be looking at to have these fixed? I just don't want to be ripped off.

Is there any where in melb that you guys recommend to have my car checked out and fixed?

btw, check out my profile, it not much but that's what i do.

Its great when things like that are read.

It means that the CV is on its last leg. When it starts to happen in reverse is when the CV is phucked. No, you can't re-grease it when it starts to click. The CV shaft is around the $200 mark from memory. But also figure in a deposit fee. I wouldn't have clue on how much a mechanic would charge.

Mis-timing the clutch and gear lever can do this. That is lifting off the clutch pedal as your still swinging the lever into the gear. But your synco's could also be worn. Does it happen on the up-shift 2-3? If so there's a good chance it will be the synco. These gearboxes have a weak 2-3 synco ring.

A worn out clutch.

Sometimes.

With gearbox/clutch. The best thing would in going around Gearbox specialists and get quotes. Do the same with mechanics as well you might even get a better deal. And give yourself a gift in the way of at least one car manual for the car. I've found that having two works out better. I've found that what one skips on the other one picks up on.

Thanks for the info.

You mentioned earlier:

The clutch is fully pressed down and it seems to have an obstacle to get passed before it can move from 3 back into 2.

The guy at the toyta service centre said something about the syncromesh, can these things be replaced/fixed?
