Why do people always bag 22R's for having crap fuel economy?

Okay, so I've got an RT142 as a daily driver. As I have given up on cars and gone the two-wheeled route, the Corona won't be getting a lot of action on the streets and is really only for rainy days & carrying stuff (or people).
The bike's been off the road for a carby rebuild over the last week or two, so the Corona has done a few miles. I have put $55 of fuel in it and my brother put $10 in when I lent it to him. So that's a total of $65 in fuel which equates to a touch under 65 litres, plus maybe 5 litres (fuel light was on) when I bought it.
Now, it's done just shy of 900kms on that 70 litres and the fuel light has only flickered once but hasn't come on solidly yet. that's about 8l/100km.... which is the best fuel economy I've ever had from a car! It's an automatic too, which you'd think would make it worse.
The only thing I can think is that I recognise that it's not a performance car and treat it as such... aside from merging onto the highway or for an occasional comic moment it's never even seen full throttle.

might be in good condition, you might baby it, it might be running lean.... but you're right, that's excellent. My old RA65 got worse fuel economy than my 1jz supra, and had 1/3 the power!

202 owns j00 all as the crappiest motor ever made 
instead of canning it they tried to make it "better" with fuel injection...

As a performance engine, perhaps. However as a motor for what is essentially a light truck it works quite well. I had four people in my RT142 the other day and you know what? Apart from the fact that the troops were full of booze and making a rackeyt, I wouldn't have known they were there.
I reckon you could load up a 22R Hilux to the nines and it would be quite happy doing it's thing.
Remember also that the motor was loosely based off a 60's design and had tacky early 80's EFI and it's probably not all that bad.

whats your secret?! best i can get is 360km to a tank suburban driving, thats a hefty 50ltres there too. I do thrash it a fair bit though, constantly sees 4 (shutup u high revin twincam boys, for a 22re 4grand is heeps  )

maybe that's why my 22r-e died.... old pac highway runs it spent it's life well over 4, blowing oil smoke the whole way
