Quick question: 4AGZE with standard GTi/SX instrument cluster Sun, 14 November 2004 23:25 Go to next message
The halfcut I bought has serious dashboard damage, so I cant use that. And I recently discovered the GZE has an electronic speedo, whereas the GE uses a mechanical speedo.

Whats the cheapest and easiest way to get around this problem, without sourcing another dash? Is there some form of electonic to mechanical workaround I can setup?

I've searched an not found anything, and im in a bit of a hurry. Any advice is appreciated.

you need to get a mechanical speedo drive from an AE92 E58 g/box. It would be safe to assume you have an AE101 f/cut? Most AE92 4agze's had mechanical speedo drive, so try and find one from that.

ORRRRR - i have thoughts that perhaps a mechanical speedo drive from another type of E series box will work eg, MR2, GT-4 etc.

I think AE86slaver is thinking more along the lines of the tacho booster that sixworks sells, you will need something to modify the tacho signal as well.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Basically, the biggest problem is. The speedo drive from my AE92 GE gearbox is too short to fit in the AE101 GZE box. And the AE101 drive is electronic. And the location of the drive is on the other side of the gearbox on the AE101 so I'd need a 90* bend in the cable.

What is the AE92 GZE LSD box like? Would the drive be located in the same spot as the AE101 GZE?

Sorry if this info sounds vague or doesnt make sense, I'm relaying it from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Confused

As the witzl said, you'll need the drive from an ae92 e58 box. The boxes fitted to the ge's are c5x boxes and their speedo drives are unsuitable.

Hmmm, not having any luck. New plan.

I'm going to try and track down a new dash.

1st question: The AE101 supercharged model's dash fits into an AE92?

if not

2nd question: Is there an AE92 supercharged model that comes with a n electronic speedo?

3rd question: Is someone willing to sell me one? I will pay $$$ for one in good condition. Because I doubt I'll be able to get one from a wrecker without buying a whole front cut. Sad

the ae101 dashes are totally different

those mechanical drives for the gze boxes are impossible to find

just ask around for awhile and see if u have any luck

u could try remove just the speedo from yr dash cluster and fit the ae101 not to sure how hard

there is a device that has an electronic puls einput then this input then spins a cable to turn the speedo

so its electronic to mechanical

http://www.abbott-tach.com/cablex.htm

dont know if it can do toyota speedos

Mr Anthony Kellam may be able to sell you an E series sender too...

Thanks for the responses guys.

My mechanic tells me the electronic drive is still needed for something in the ecu (injector related i believe). So what we are doing for now, is just doing a dodgy (at my request, just to get the damn thing back on the road after 2 months), and cutting out my instrument cluster, and cramming the AE101 instrument cluster in.

This is a temporary fix until I can find a better solution.

My mechanic also mentioned a device like that too. But when my current dash is full of cracks, i might as well cut it up and stuff the cluster in and replace the whole lot later with something a little newer/nicer.

Also... it just hit me... using the electronic speedo drive, the car will be speed limited @ 180km/h wont it?

your mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about with relation to the speed sensor.

Get an E series mechanical sender, use your original dash, do the 30c mod to the factory tacho drive so it runs off the GZE ignitor, connect the GZE ECU's speed sensor input to the 4 pulse per revolution on the back of your AE93 dash cluster.

Mr Revhead from twincam.org can source you a mechanical sender, an MR2 E51 sender will also work.

Or you could just slap in an Apexi RSM for a temporary fix to give you a speedo display from the original elec sender while you source a mechanical sender. Dont hack up your SX dash.

The RSM will get rid of the 180km speed cut, but it doesn't really matter because the GZE will not get up to 180 down the main straight of QR or Darlington Park, or down the track at Willowbank.

The ECU gets its SPD signal from the dash cluster. The ECU doesnt care if that signal originated from a mechanical cable or from an electronic sender, it's a switched ground at 4 pulses per revolution of sender either way (from a reed switch/four magnets or from a switched transistor respectively).

I can sell you a complete mechanical E58 sender but these cost $80. I have only one left and will probably kick myself next AE92 conversion I do but you seem to be in trouble Wink

I would suggest this would be the easiest path. Also, if you aren't able to perform the modifcations to your tacho assembly I can do this mod for $20 if you can get the cluter to me for half an hour.

email me at akellam@optusnet.com.au if you're interested.
