Quote for 7MGTE head rebuild Mon, 15 November 2004 02:49 Go to next message
I've been quoted for a rebuild of my head (read: head only), so I thought I'd run it by you guys and see what you all think.

ARP head stud kit: $220
Full vrs gasket kit: $262
Labour to remove/refit head + change head gasket only: $990

Options:
1-piece valves: $27.50 each
Valve spring set: $300
HKS 1.2mm metal head gasket: $145 US + shipping
Full head service (grind, de-burr, replace all gaskets + seals, etc): $600

In other words...

If I go for just the gasket change, I'm looking at a bit over a grand.

If I go for gasket change + head service, I'm looking at about 2 grand.

And if I want the full works done I'm looking at about 3 grand drive in & out.

Opinions?

How many miles has the engine done ?

Don't know what one piece valves are, 'cause if they are more than one piece, you have a problem !!!

Valve spring set - meh, not a huge priority.

Save a bit on the labour and remove and refit the head yourself (unless you don't have the tools or capability).

Replace the timing belt whilst you are at it.

I thought a MHG and not touching the block is a no-no and would be just as prone to failure as a std gasket ?

Cheers

Michael B

PS How are the wheels coming along ?

The HKS MHG's aren't just a metal gasket, they are layered ones with metal in between something else.

Slight hiccup with the wheels - the adapter plates I was going to use are illigal in NSW Sad Looking at putting the cash towards a head rebuild instead now.

Dunno how many kms the engine has done - I'd guess between 100k and 150k.

Timing belt has been done afaik.

I was planing on going for the 2 grand option, so a grind is included on the head. Only basic block preparation though - scrape clean, and stone-grind (i think where they rub a knife-sharpening stone kinda thing over it a few times to help polish it a bit). If there are any major pits or holes, I'm going to be in trouble though, regardless.

In terms of the metal head gasket - if I'm going to be looking at about 14-15psi, should I go for the 1.2mm gasket or the 1.4mm gasket?

Depends how much they shave off the head. I went for a 1.2mm HKS gasket on my car because it made up for the amount my head was shaved and left the compression levels the same

i just got my 18RG head done.

full head service,
basically it included

re-ground cams $250 {ripped off}
new SS ferrea valves $20 ea
new springs, $100
VRS $110
straighten
skim
setting the valve lash
port

$1600, COST price parts and sub-lets and only $500 labour, cause my dad did the work, retail was close to $3000, and that was just the head, not the labout to R&R it. Confused
