I had a thick crowbar through my wheel studs onto the ground at the angle that would give the least flex through the bar.
then I got a big breaker and put a pole on the end (after lots of wd40)
mind you, I bent my first breaker, so be careful. I went out and got a fatter one.
They are done up super super super hard
Hammering it once you have pressure on the bar to break the 'lock' can help sometimes too
also, make sure you have a deep enough socket on it
ps, my rattle gun I had wouldn't take it off either

You need to have someone sitting in the car with their foot on the brakes.
Then get an extra long 1/2" drive socket handle and slip a long peice of Water Pipe over the handle !

Most wheels have a section in the middle (centre cap) you can pop out. With mine I took the wheel off to take the centre cap off then put the wheel back on, put the car back on the ground, placed handbrake on and used the biggest breaker bar I had (1/2 inch drive almost 1 metre long). They are around the 50 dollar mark and always come in handy. I had the same prob as you at first, took it down to the mechanic - his rattle gun didn't work, so he used the breaker bar to loosen them, then did them up just tight engouht so I could drive home.
I bought my own breaker bar soon after.
You could do the jack up trick and get someone to hold the brake on. Just be careful the torque you apply doesn't rock the car off the stands or jack...
I thought it was safer with the wheels on even if it did take an extra 10-20 mins..

That's it, use a big, fat mother of a rattle gun - the $29 ones don't stand a chance in hell.

The best one is as Highrolla said.
Jack up, take the wheel off, remove the split pin or whatever locks the nut on (please tell me you've removed this), put wheel back on with centre cap removed.
Lower to ground & have someone sit in the car with brakes on.
You will need an extension for your breaker bar (I use a galvanised fence tube post about 1m long)
Works EVERY time.

I bought an impact socket, one of those big black ones. It's about twice as deep as a normal socket, and a hell of a lot stronger, so it doesnt break/round off. I used a $30 1/2" drive flex handle, and a metal fence tube thing which is like 1.5m long. Not a problem at all. Altho I broke a sidchrome handle undoing one on my corolla

I built up the most awesome breaker bar on earth for mine, from repco I purphased a 1/2inch drive socket connector with a hole through the side through which you can slide through a bar of any lenght you like, went to a wetal shop and bought myself 1.5m worth of solid steel bar, I can undo loosen the hub nut from 180ft/lb with one hand using 1.5m of leverage. Best bit, my breaker bar cost me $9.

Big impact gun will do the trick. You won't even need to lod the hub.

Speaking of rattle guns, whats a good way to increase the tank capacity? Ours is one of those pissy ones that only holds 29L, ie. really only made for painting things
Can we just use something like a 50L LPG tank with some custom in/out bits?
