As a general rule I heard try to get something below 100,000km's. 130,000km's is pushing it and you definitely don't want something that's done 150,000km's.
I could be wrong, I'm not sure myself. I'm sure someone will read my mistakes and come along and give you more info (which is what you wanted )

well personally...
im not too keen on buying/selling anything like cars between friends.
not too sure on what to check though.. just the standard stuff..
check for excess oil around/from the the BOV (if fitted)
my turbo needs a new bearing thingy (like $15)
and oil comes a little bit..
apart from that.. dunno? :P

I wouldn't be buying anything with a turbo and over 100000km unless they have receipts to show the turbo has had a rebuild unless of course that car is a saab or volvo. Another thing do you really want a early 90's car that has a turbo driving the front wheels. the mx6 tubo is written off by many magazines as beign a bit of a dog.

Exactly.
Never buy a friends car, unless you KNOW EXACTLY how they have treated it the whole time they have had it.
The main reason for this, is that if something goes wrong, you don't know whether he knew about it, and chose not to tell/warn you, or whether its something that just happened.
Its like lending money to friends, its not something you usually do.

hmm he isnt really a close friend, more of an acquaintance. But he has treated the care pretty well from what i have seen, i might have to have a look at the engine and stuff before i even consider it. wonder how much it would be to get a professional to check it out. he tells me the odometer shows 237 thousand K's so thats a bit iffy, would have to take a good look at the engine etc i suppose. turbo rebuild after ever 100 thousand K's you say? what does that involve, like rebuilding the turbo itself? its a 1991 model mx6 turbo coupe, he is looking for 4000 for it, so i thought i could probably sell my rolla for around that and buy it. and what did you mean by turbo driving the front wheels =\
cheers guys.

u can get people like nrma to do an inspection before u buy. they check everything, even jack up the car etc...
those mx6 turbos are quite nice cars. im not sure on handling but being front wheel drive and heavy and big engines i reckon it wont be that great. in terms of performance i think they are very underrated. very quick with abit of mods and very luxury car. power everything and velour trims etc...

Just one of them - seriously.

| And conversely, my Supra's turbo has done over 335,000kms now and is still in fine fettle. Unless a turbo has been boosted beyond its capabilities, or they've been chronically bad at remembering to idle the car down, turbos are like electronics. They either fail straight away or last forever.
Of course this is just Toyota metallic turbos, other manufacturers may vary and ceramic turbos fatigue. Moral of this story? Buy a Supra.
