Help me please... Wed, 17 November 2004 03:48 Go to next message
Ok... Here's my situation...

With my part-time job im making 70-100 a week...

My front discs are severely warped and need replacement...
My front springs have been cut....
All of my shocks have seen better days...

I currently have $1000 saved and can sell a few things to make that around $1200...

What I want to do...

Buy whiteline control springs and KYB shocks to suit them... ($1232)

Buy rear swaybar $180
Buy front swaybar (if necessary) $220

Buy DBA longlife slotted rotors... quoted at $145 each...

What should I do???

I am going to buy the springs and shocks...

But I dont know what to do next... Brakes or swaybars??? Preferably I want to buy as little as possible to make the car handle well (ST162) without sacrificing too much of my income (or lack there of)...

Sorry for the long post guys but I really dont know what to do...

I bought my springs and shocks all up for 580 bucks. Got the springs from whiteline for 320 and went to auto one who had 45% off shocks and consistently do and picked up the kyb for 65 bucks each.
They sold me the wrong shocks and ended up getting monore gt gas for the front at same price when they would have been around 100 bucks +.
Personally I'd do brakes before swaybar, you'll prob have a decent hand;ing improvement anyway i know I did, so the you should see how that change feels and you prob might not need the swaybars. Do brakes then asses afterwards if the swaybars need doing. Remember theres no point beign able to go fast through a corner if you can't stop in the event of an emergency

I just cant seem to find really good shocks for less than 200 each!... the rears are even worse...

Its a balance between savings and handling...

I spent around 6 months sussing out parts for my cra. Originally it was gunna cost around 350 just for the front shocks, my tip shop around, repco regualry has decent sales and as i said auto one, they fucked up my order by oredring in stock for a crown KYB doesn't even make shocks for rt142 yet they tried to sell them to me the rears were the same and hence I had to wait another two weeks for the monroes but it all worked out.
Even auto barn regularly has 10% of king springs.
Auto one stocks KYB Monoroe and a few other so i would try them for the shocks, they however quoted me 350 for the springs and thus went back to whiteline and got heavy duty standard ride height for 1609 a pair. The quoted me the same price for lowered, originally i was looking at lowering th car by two inches but backed away cos I was only gettin gnormal shocks or though the gT gas for the front are compatable with lowered springs. Many on these forums say it doesn't matter but at that stage I wasn't really as knowledgeable as i am now. My uncle helped install them as I he used to work for a alan jones pitstop and he kinda can do anything, cost a case of vb. I was quoted 70 bucks an hour at whitleline for fitting and they claimed a 4hr job. With complications ie having to drain oil from struts cos they were the originals and the gland nut needing to be sprayed with wd40 and still took a while to get off it took around that prob less.
Shop around and you will get a good deal. Also with repco if you know anyone with a NRMA goldcard they can get 10% off their

I will continue to look around...

I'll talk to the guys at whiteline and ask them what sort of shocks I can buy in monroe to suit their control springs...

The gt gas would prob be the only ones but preferably I'd try to get kybs most ppl rate them higher than monroe I have had a mix of the two and haven't really had any probs and I corner pretty hard sometimes, they ahve been in for around 6months but prob only 3000kms so only time will tell. Autoone as I said stock kyb's. My local store at minto had to order them up from melbourne but that only took three working days so no probs there. The monroes took about a week i think but still no probs.

gday mate, i would strongly suggest taht you do yur breaks first, usually this just means the fronts, ~begs the question just what happene to your car for your to have warped your discs, but i wont question you too much on that one~

as you would have guessed a 184 not a 162, but i would strongly suggest that you just get some normal discs, and then get your self some good pads ~ie i run bendix ultimates~ you will be supprised just how much a difference your pads will make. on the odd chance its only a few bucks difference between stock discs and slotted and drilled, go for the better set.

as for suspension, i haven't gotten around to mine, i make a bit more then you do but i don't ever seem to have money lying around, but oh well. i'm looking into some kingspring progressional springs sitting on some koni's but it looks like that might be a bit expensive for me, i'm also looking into some monoroe GT gas, i don't know how much they are goin for tho.

I've got no idea how the discs got warped... they were like it when i bought it... you can feel the pedal pulse... and if you jack the wheel off the ground they bind instead of spinning freely...

Dude,
they may just need machining.

Take the discs off and take them to a Brake shop.

They should be able to tell you whether it's possible to machine them. Should only cost $10-$20 each.

Lurrve the 162s !

Cheers

When my neighbour serviced my car for me the pads were heaps worn he puts bendix ultimate on there and have to say they have helped heaps, the car pulls up really well from high speed having had to do a couple emergency stops prob also has to do with better suspension and tyres but yeah brakes are very improtant. I'm thinking of getting new rotors when I have more more the current ones squeal like anything under light braking since new pads were installed. Ps how hard is it to change rotors over I acn get dba rotors so no strut changes just a swap over

corona RT142: yeah the brake pads make a world of difference, i think you'll find that the squeal your hearing is from the diffenent compound that the brake pads are made out of i'm not too sure that changing to DBA rotors is goin to change that but i'm not too sure so i might be wrong, how ever when the pads get warm the squeal should go away, they are performace pads.

FWD Celica: this is very well true, i would suspect that the disc might just need machining, and for 79rollaboy, this is the cheaper alternative, i would get the discs fixed up if you can and get some bendix ultimate pads on it, as far as slotted and drilled rotors are concerned i think you are wasting your money, your not goin to need them pulling up unless your:
a) racing
b) upgrading engines or other significant upgrades to speed
c) doin something stupid on the roads(this is a modify toyota club we do not support reckless driving, what you do in your car is your own business)

thats just my opinion, if i were you check to see if you can get the discs machined, change the pads, fix up the suspension. then i would just be happy with what you have, later on if you feel you need better braking power look at upgrading rotors and/or calipers, and for better handling the sway bars.

yep oges away once they are warm or under heavier braking applications, it only squeals when you are slightly leaning on the brakes like when going down a hill, doesn't bother me and has really almost gone away now, was really loud when first got the pads and has slowly gotten quieter over the nine month period

no they have been in over nine months now and still have hardly been worn down, when we fitted the shocks in june they had barely been touched, don't know how much is left now but would say almost all still, the last set lasted my uncle around 4 years and he used to drive the car harder than I do

Re: Help me please... Thu, 18 November 2004 10:41 Go to previous message
ummm well i hope mine last that long, some how i don't think they will, or my rotors will be gone by the time i get thru them, we'll see how they go, but the real question is do either of you drive as hard as i do? ~once again we do not support reckless drive, but what you do with your car is your own business~

well i put mine on probably about august when i got my tax return and got some bridgestone G3 such a good tyre, grips as well or better then the yokoharma A539's i had, and they wear so much less the yoko's last me like 6 months, and they are now on the back and only have a couple of mills on them, but they hardly wear at all on the back of my car.

yes and thats another good upgrade to handling, 79rolla look in to some really good rubber, suspension and brakes are useless with shit rubber, i'm so never goin back to hard compound tyres, the softer aggressive tyres are as much a safty thing as a performance upgrade.

regards
DunkyMonkey

ps, sorry about the warning i keep posting but a mate of mine rolled his car doin something stupid coming down a mountain i drive regualarly, i didn't see the crash but has my friends scare of the mountain. happy driving, and drive in your limits!!
