Indicator problems (help please!) Wed, 09 October 2002 06:43 Go to next message
I have this problem with my indicators. I flick them on and they will flash once or twice then just stop. Sometimes they flash for a long time (say 10 to 15 flashes) then again, just stop. But usually they'll only blink between once or three time and sometimes not at all! I have cleaned underneath the steering column thouroughly and applied this contact stuff I found on the garage. It hasn't fixed the problem, but seems to have helped.
What could it be? What can I do and how can I perhaps fix it myself? Real soon.

Can't really tell you exactly what's wrong.

Could be a bad connection. (will a bump temporarily fix the problem?)

Could be a faulty indicator relay.

Can you still hear the click click click that the relay makes when the indicators fault?

is it fast or slow clicking? (indicating you've probably got a blown globe.)

Can't really tell you what's wrong without a bit more info but hope this helps.

I haven't hit a bad bump to see if that temporarily fixes it at all. But when taking a tight corner pretty aggresively they tend to work a bit better for a kilometre or so. No clicks when they fault. Nothing. The lever stays up (or down) and no sound or indicating when they fault. No blown globes. Wires seem fine (in my limited experience. I'd say its the relay. Better get an auto electrician quick 'cause I can't leave that going too long.

sounds like a relay, but one little basic check "doubt its the problem but better check anyway" make sure the hazards switch is fully off, as if the hazard switch isn't fully in the off position the indicators wont work,

also check fuses may have a dodgy fuse

I know this is an obvious one, but this can happen when a bulb is blown!

When they stop flashing, get out, and look at all of the indicators on that side to see if one of them has gone out, this will tell you there is a bad earth in that light.

You don't need to go see an auto elec to check out the relays. Just swap one from another car that you works properly, if it makes the other car fault and your car is working properly you know thats it.
Most indicator relays are interchangeable.

P.S. If you go to a good wrecker, they'll give you a relay. (whether it works or not...)
