Re-building the 7M Wed, 17 November 2004 12:11 Go to next message
Would anyone know of any workshops in Sydney that would do a basic rebuild on a 7M-GE engine for about $1,000?

Thanks

For a grand!!! That would be stretching it wouldn't it? I paid $3500... about the same cost as a reconditioned 7M.

Confused damn!

My 7M makes a bit of a strong rumble when starting up, but in general runs fairly smooth... Do you think that with a full service and new clutch plate the car would be good for a 10 hour trip to gold coast, and 10 hours back?

The car has done 182,000km.

wolf,

My MA61 with it's 5M done 140,000kms before it did it's original headgasket, and ever since then it has done 170,000kms spent 10G and have already done 3 other headgaskets and 1 complete rebuild (Last time around).

I wouldn't drive my MA61 with a blown headgasket as I didn't want to cause too much trouble damage. In my situation, I didn't Very Happy

Cheers.

You should have, any hopefully the 5ME would've suffered some permanent damage.

I have just got a quote to install a fully reconditioned7MGE into an 89 Cressida for $4020 (Repco). Engine alone, no instalation is $3560. Local Toyoto dealer wants over $5000 to rebuild present engine - BHG.

Wish I had your skills.

It gets better. The Toyota dealer rang me yesterday with the official quote to supply 2nd hand head (didn't know if it had been rebuilt or just inspected) and rebuild the bottom end for me and install it - $5,600.00 (no warranty). Then he says his brother would like to buy the car from me with the bad engine - maybe an ulterior motive Confused I have booked the tow truck to take the car to Repco's work shop and have the fully reconditioned engine installed with a 12 month warranty for $4020.

have you tried workshops around town at all? I mean a head should cost no more than $1000 rebuilt fully...

And the rest certainly isnt worth 3000 to do...

Actually, I'm in Newcastle, so I guess it was a bit far anyway. The $2300 full retail is for a 2nd hand unreconditioned motor I guess. My bill ended up running.

Remove head and diagnose problem - $ 420.00
New reconditioned motor installed - $4020.00
Water pump, new hoses, fan belts, filters and spark plugs - $ 800.00
----------
Total $5240.00

Frightening isn't it.

I've also spent over $300 on the power steering and $125.00 on the automatic just before this happened. All up about $5650.00. Hopefully nothing else will go wrong!

Now I'm really angry because it turned out to be a Redlands engine anyway. The price I was quoted (by Repco who supposedly organised the engine) was $3650 for the engine itself and $4020 installed. When I accepted, they passed me over to another mob who did the installation. They then told me I needed a new water pump and all the hoses and belts should be replaced. Extra $820. The $420 for the diagnosis was actually by a Toyota dealer and I had the car towed to this place from there to have the job done.

You're not kidding. I must be the soft touch of the year. I was going to go back and have them do the first oilchange, but they can forget it now.

if u go elsewhere for the oil change make sure u are within their 100-1000k range {or what ever it is} and get it documented or they can tell u to get stuffed when it dies

Sounds like I'd better get the first service there. They said it'd be around $80.00 which, for an oil and filter changes sounds a bit rich to me.
