Im pulling apart my 1J and at a minimum ill need a new pair of crankshaft thrust washers. For a while now my engine has ocassionally been blowing out white smoke when i take my foot off the gas after boosting, so im assuming this is valve stem seals, which i want to replace while the engine is out. Where is the best place to get all the parts i.e. gaskets etc. ill need? Is penrith toyota the only place? Anywhere in WA?
Cheers

New Town Toyota have a Jap Spec Parts Program - you could try there, but their service is shocking. Expect to go to the counter and be ignored untill you start to kick up a stink, and then real back at the prices they want to charge! Alternatively, list the part numbers and see who can get the parts direct from Japan - Toymods seems to be full of pseudo "jap importers" at the moment?!
The white smoke on liftoff after boosting could also be sump pressurisation, casuing the oil in the return line to pool around the bearings. As the pressure evens out the problem goes away.

martin: Who is ray ferrai, does he own a part company or something? No the 1J is not dead it was actually running quite well for an engine with no crankshaft thrust washers and lots of end float
CLG: yer i hope it isnt valve stem seals, cant be bothered pulling head off.
Does anyone else have ideas on what could be cause the white smoke?

yes ray ferrai has an importing bussiness , that it wher ei got my 1jz and manual package from .. and alot of my other parts , eg brakes ,
i was chasing a slave for the getrag 6 sp he got me that through toyota ,, ( wher ever he goes ) ,, just give him a call .. im goin to his place now actually .. gotta get some alloy welding done
if i was u idd driv the 1jz until she blows .. and just get another import motor and replace it . $1200 - 1500 for a motor ..
might as well get more miles out of the clunker u got now .. it might last another year or 2 .. by the time u fix up the 1jz u got now .. all that time and effort
just a thought

Martin: The engine is already out, only takes me 2 hours. It is only the cranshaft thrust washers that have failed. Because i got it early enough at worst all ill probably have to do is replace the crank bearings, nothing major. I was thinking about selling in 6 months time so i dont want to leave it and sell it to someone knowing there was a problem. Its not a clunker there is probably nothing wrong with it. Not a whole lot of time and effort!

I am sorry, but I am gobsmacked by your 2 hour removal time!
that is amazing! took me 2 hours just to get the inlet manifold off so the wiring wasn't in the way!

Skip, with a bit of rooting around, the right spring compressor (Snap on make a beauty and I have one in the shed) and some nylon rope, you don't need to remove the head to do valve stem springs...

Chris: Yeah nothing to it, 4wd's have plenty of space to move around under etc.
bbaacchhyy: Yeah thanks mate im getting confused. I once replaced the seals on a 308 with the aid of said spring compressing tool and modded spark plug to blow comressed air into the cylinder to hold the valve up.
