Turbos installed, now almost no boost Thu, 18 November 2004 07:28 Go to next message
Here's the story so far:

* Got a pair of HKS turbos from Japan. Package came with 2 turbos, dump pipe and oil lines.

* Installed it all onto the car (a few issues, but all were sorted int the end. Needed to customise oil return lines)

* Went for a drive... boost appears to be coming on at the correct time (~2500rpm), but will only build 1psi per 1000rpm. If I give the car hell, I might see 10psi at 7200rpm. I know this isn't right, cos a few mates with the same kit on their 1JZ pull 20psi with ease below 7000rpm.

Things I have checked so far:

* Vacuum lines. All appear in order. Connected to the correct locations. Wastegates hooked up to positive boost reference.
One minor issue here, the HKS wastegates have 2 different nipples on them. One above, and one below the diaphragm. I have hooked up my lines to the nipple above the diaphragm. I *think* this is correct.

* No rags in the intercooler piping (checked just in case).

* Pulled off wastegate lines completely. Boost still behaves the same.

This would lead me to believe that the wastegates are open pretty much all the time (unless an exhaust wheel is dead). I haven't checked the exhaust wheels (should have done before installing, but the turbos and dumps were all attached to each other and pulling them apart seemed more effort than it was worth at the time).

I have tried pulling on the wastegate rods to see if I could open the flaps by hand, but they seem very tight (I couldn't actually make them move).

Have I missed anything, or does anyone have any other things I can try before I go pulling the turbos back off again to have another look. I don't fancy the 16 hour pull down and put together procedure, but if I have to, I just have to.

Any help is much appreciated.

By the way, the car was working perfectly on other turbos at 17psi prior to installation of these turbos.

So these are internal wastegated turbos then?

I am a little confused regarding the two nipples on the wastegate.

Other than that, I am of no help as I would have checked the same things you already have.

BTW what turbos are these?

If youve pulled the wastegate line off with no boost increase it's definetly gotta be a case of the wastegate stuck completely or partially open or, fugged exhaust wheels!!!!

Yes, internal gates. The turbos are HKS T3G model.

Pretty much what I'm thinking too. Just need to get some ideas on testing these theories without having to pull the turbos off the car again. I'm up for pretty much anything at this point.

Simon,

I'd be looking closer at those two nipples. I don't know much about wastegates, but one nipple might be the positive boost reference, but the other might be for a boost controller. And having it all the way open (nothing on it) could be making it run minimum boost.

You could make a short vacuum hose that is blocked (clamp the end?) and put that on the other nipple.

Dunno, but trying to help.

Thanks Pete. I'm willing to try anything at the moment.
Will test it out tomorrow when the engine is cold enough to touch again.

2 turbos, braided oil feeds, and dump pipe from Japan, around $1500. Had to make my own oil returns (modified factory pipes to fit).

Aiming for 300kW at the rear. Been talking to two other Soarer owners with the same kit. Apparently 300+ is easily achievable with these.

damn! that is cheap as chippies!

So I take it these turbos would be similar to highflowed steel wheel ct12a's then?

Slightly bigger than high flowed CT12A I would say. The compressor housing is much larger than the factory one.

To test your wastegate actuators, grab a bike pump, tee off a pressure gauge & apply pressure to the wastegate actuator (engine not running).
You'll find you need something like 15 psi to get the buggers to move. The pressure is much higher due to the fact the engine isn't running. When it is running, the exhaust gas is pushing against the wastegate trying to open it, hence less pressure required.

Hope this helps.

Peter

Have you tried connecting the positive pressure line to the bottom nipple?

Hey Soarer,

I dont know if this will help you but
http://www.hksusa.com/info/download.asp?id=1642#
above is a link to the HKS EVC III installation manual.
It shows how to hook up a boost controller to a two-port wastegate actuator.

I get the impression your turbos wont work without boost into one nipple and off boost vacuum into the other or some sort of configuration??

I dont even have a turbo car but mate has st185 widebody gt4.
did some research into hooking up his evc and noticed his ct26 has 2 port wastegate actuator.

Thanks for the advice all.

It did end up being what I thought... one wastegate was too loose and wasn't building boost. First run out on the street pushed 17psi, which is much more like it.

More news to come once it's tuned Smile
