6cylinder help Thu, 18 November 2004 12:40 Go to next message
It's 11:40 so i'll keep this quick and to the point! I have an MX73 cressida. 5ME's dead. Looking for new one and have stumbled across 5MGE. The guy's from these forums and unfortunately just sold his computer but says he thinks that my 5ME computer will run the 5MGE no worries. Can anyone confirm or deny this? will my %ME loom plug into the new head, injector plugs and all? Also how much more effort will be involved in the swap, what else will i need to do. What do i do with all the antipollution piping im sure that the twin cam head will have all different stuff to my old single cam unit. Any help will be greatly appreaciated!

Thanks in advance, André Ribeiro

If the 5MGE has an old mechanical dizzy, then it will run with a 5ME ECU no probs. If it has a full electronic dizzy, then no it won't.

What we have done is just modify the 5ME dizzy to fit in the 5MGE, swap all the 5ME sensors over and run the 5MGE with a 5ME ECU. It cost us around 1-150 to have the dizzy modified.

It's been a while but I recall that I needed to use the 5ME throttle body since the TPS from the 5ME did not fit 6MGE (which I presume has the same TPS as the 5MGE).

I had to change one heater hose and the upper radiator hose. I used an upper radiator hose from an RA40 Celica (perfect fit for my application, MA46).

I had to muck around with my throttle linkages as the throttle body is located in a slightly different position to the old 5ME. Probably not a issue for you; I assume an MX73 already has a cable throttle.

Not sure if the exhaust manifold will line-up with the existing exhaust. I had to change the section from the manifold to the cat. convertor.

like i said, it works just fine.
the plugs will plug in, the ecu will plug in.
the tps will work if its an older style tps, and not the potentiometer from teh later models.

i have been running this setup for a while now, so can guarantee it works.

The 5MGE TPS can be used, but you only use 3 out of the 4 wires (this is only if the 5ME on doesn't fit.)

Rest is as GT said.

Exhaust manifolds are different.
