remote start using alarm

this ain't really toyota/weather related, kinda ricey in a way, but I've been toying with the idea of adapting my car alarm for remote start.
If i could find a voltage output from the radio reciever for when I press my panic button on my alarm remote, then hook that up to a couple of switches, etc to give power to my coil, and say starter motor for 3secs (or couple a switch to my tacho to take voltage from the starter once it gets some revs), then in theory i should be able to start my car using my alarm remote.
I've read about it being illegal in some states with manuals, and if its done dodgy it could be dangerous, but i just want to know if it could be done, that is without buying a $3000 alarm system.
anyone had any experience doing anything like this?
cheers
rob.

Its fairly easy to do! Some gear boxes have a switch that has a normally closed circuit when it is in gear so it can be setup so it wont start when it is in gear! Just depends on ya gearbox!

Awesome! so what would i need for it? I'm thinking relay switch to ignition, relay switch to starter, not sure how i can rig it to turn off by remote aswell, don't think thats easy/possible. I know i can hack into the flashers wire to get a signal from my alarm when its disarmed, not sure about for the panic button though.
i don't think i'm dumb enough to leave it in gear and start it, and if i do and hit someone then it was there fault for getting too close to by car, and if i somehow manage to run over myself, then s*** happens.
another crazy idea of my mates was to hook cruise control up to a manual, use a line locker on the front brakes, use the (hand)brake for the front wheels, spin the rear tyres, set cruise control on, make sure car ain't going anywhere then step out of car and admire your burnout from outside your car, to the amazement of on-lookers!! hehe.
PS i take no responsibility for people trying these ideas at home.

would be good to warm it up in the mornings. u could be having ur brekkie, and u could start ur car from the kitchen and when ur ready to go, so is the car. I'd do it if i could but it's not worth $300.

trust me its not soemthing u WANT to do..... too many times i've heard the story..... imagine the situation you just pointed out... having breakky, turn on the car to warm it up. Joe Fvckwit walks by, see's your lovely car turned on and running. He decides it would be nice to steal your car and he breaks your window, lets himself in and drives off with it, before you have the chance to even say "HEY FVCKWIT!"
i dont like the idea thats all...

With most remote start alarms the alarm is still active! So if someone opens a door or smashes a window, the engine will stop and the alarm will sound! But this wont be the case with a cheap home made job!

Yeah, most of them will kill the ignition instantly if the alarm goes off or the hand brake is dropped.
It's no biggie for me since I have to leave my car idling when I stop it anyway...

THE WITZL; thanks mate, i'll go check that out tomorrow.
the reason i wanted it was for work, so i can warm up my car then finish locking the place up. i guess it won't be really necessary for summer.

Not as hard as having the patience to sit idle in your car for several minutes, waiting for the engine to warm up, especially when your cabin is freezing cold or boiling hot. But like I said before, i don't think it's a luxury worth $300 and up. Saying that, if i could have that feature in my car, I would definitely find it useful in many situations. I reckon It would be cool for one of those Hollywood escape scenes, when the hero runs to the car tries to start the car but it won't kick over (back to the future), in the mean time, a big ass truck is charging like a bull, about to smash the hero's car to pieces...
