MX83 - Big miss in engine

My 1989 MX83 -188,000 km started to miss really badly the other day when I backed it out onto the street. It did this all day and felt like one or two cylinders weren't working at all. It ran really rough with little power. I got my dad to drive it and he just said it runs like a "hairy goat". Big help dad. The really strange thing is that last night, I was trying to accelerate down the road with it bucking and missing, and all of a sudden it just went and it's been running smoothly since. Are these symptoms that anyone recognises. I thought it was electrical until it decided to go and didn't miss any more. Dad said maybe dirty petrol, but now I'm getting paranoid about it. What could it have been?

Since then, it has started to miss again, really badly. Sometimes, it is smooth as silk, then it starts missing next time I drive it. I am really worried about this.

It could be a whole range of problems, anything from crap floating around in your tank, to the dreaded BHG. We can only take wild guesses from here - take it to a mechanic!

my engine would fully stall for about a second and then keep on keeping on.. this was at about 2500 revs every time.. i started playing round with electrical connections and found that if i jiggled the lead from the main coil to the dizzy it would do the same thing.. (TIP: do not jiggle close to either end of the lead as you will get a lovely zap followed by a burning smell which dies not leave your nostrils for days)
i remember my mate thinking he was funny a few days prior to the car farking up, talking about how if "i pull out this lead you wont be able to start your car"........ or have it run normally for the next week or so apparently oh really.. is that so genius?
goodluck mate.. the best way to fix these problems is probably......................................... a 1J
or sell it and buy an uber light car and put a powerful modern engine in it..

Well, car's been running reasonably well lately, except just after it starts when it can be a bit rough. today, I drove over to get some prawns and when I started it up to come home, it ran rough, stalled, didn't want to idle, then I noticed all this steam coming out of the exhaust pipe. Drove it home, only about 2 km and the temperature had gone off the gauge by the time I got there. No doubt a blown head gasket. I just knew this would happen to me. Can anyone tell me how hard they are to get, approximate cost and how much I am likely to have to pay to have it done. It is Sunday morning, so can't ring around.

Yeah, don't go to Toyota.
For a bit more, (like 6000-7000 total) you can put a 1jzgte in there and never had a BHG worry again.
Or if that is too much, for about $4000 total you can put a 2jzge in there and have more power, silkier power, and no insurance/rego/engineering problems.

Don't do what I did and pussy out and rebuild the 7M... I wish I'd put a 2JZGE or 1JZGTE in when I had the chance. The 7M cost me almost the same amount and I had another BHG 7 months down the track.
Do what CrUZida suggested.

| Thats alright for you to say, but I have no mechanical skills, no idea where to locate an engine and have to pay a mechanic to install an engine. If I could do this for $6000 I would, but I think it would be a lot more than that with me having to pay for everything, including installation.

It probably wouldn't be impossible to do for $6000 even with paying for installation. $3000 for halfcut, $600 for loom to be adjusted, $1000 for odd bits and pieces, $1500 for fitting the engine into car = $6100 I haven't looked into the prices of JZX81 halfcuts these days but they were around $3000 when I did.
