Ring? How much have, would, will you spend?

I'm taking the big dive and condemming myself to a lifetime of taking out the garbage and doing the dishes, however all for a worthwhile cause.
I'm wondering how much to spend on an engaugement ring? I have hear all of these different stories about spending 2 months wages etc. and I am lead to believe that these rumours were started by females wanting "more". I'm by no means a cheapskate as I'm getting a ring custom made, but the quotes I got leave me thinking Should I be looking further up the scale?
What is you opinion(s)?

That is why I'm getting somthing custom done. comes from the heart a little more than just going out and finding the biggest cheapest rock I can. somthing that has meaning to us.
Like getting a piston ring from my blown engine, a piston ring from her blown engine, a new chrome moly ring (only the best for my girl) sticking them together and resized to fit her finger and mounting a diamond on that blue silicon stuff that seems to stick to everything and never come off.

I got married this year and the ring cost jack shit,It is only a sign of your love not not the love itself there for it should not reflect dollars spent. If you want the spend heaps it is up to you but money can be better spent getting your future TOGETHER sorted ie house or kids etc.
You no doudt get the picture ,it a personal thing and any woman that thinks she needs a mega buck ring is not worth having.
Love and commitment can't be measured by the dollar
It's a good thing my wife loves a cheap bastard
BTW congrats

You don't have to spend a fortune, just make sure it's one she likes. Do a little research, find out exactly what sort of ring she likes and go from there.

For all the comments about setting up for the future etc. Yes that is in my mind, However we have bourght a house together, and are generally setup for our lives together.
I was ballparking about $5000 for a ring and decided that there wasn't anything around that was "just right". I do know what she is looking for in terms of style etc. but I thourght I'd add a few personal touches and get a custom ring made based on a certain style and add somthing that connects the ring to me as well as her ( ie her birthstone and my birthstone ) the quote came in however much less than this, and I started wondering Am I doing this right?
My best mate proposed with a $12,000 ring, all this ideas of spending 2 months wages on a ring (for me that could be up to $20,000 on a good 2 months. ($0 on a bad 2 months)) after that I just don't know where I'm at. I feel a little like I'm selling myself short.

Mate go here, girls love Tiffany's I got my gf a necklace from there for our 12 months and she's never forgotten it, and it's not come off since she got it!
Tiffany's has a pretty awesome range from $200 right through to the $1,000,000 and above. There's a few in Australia, one in the CBD in Sydney. It's one of those shops where there is 2 security guards on all the time, you get free drinks and the shop assistants will try stuff on for you so you can see what it looks like.
It also comes in the green bag, which seems to be a meca for girls, my gf has still kept the bag it came in, her friends keep asking to see it

DO NOT BUY FROM A JEWLRY STORE
best bet is to ring a diamond wholesaler. theres some in the city, get your stone then find a jewler. you will save at least 80% mark up and end up with a more unique and better quality ring.
look up the net on diamond grading before u go out so u have an better idea on what to look for also.

i'd go about $2000 on engagement ring, and maybe around $6000 on wedding ring. But spend a fair bit on the wedding/honeymoon coz she'll remember that then save up for a house etc
Then again, i aint getting married for another 6years or so

I just bought my engagement ring. I've got contacts who can do you a good deal for your price.
Your budget is good, stick to it - you'll get something good for that.
Basically what you want is a 1 carat diamond - that's what i got. Its a psychological number which will impress the girl. Plus it looks huge unless her fingers are chubby (which i'm sure they arent!)
Find yourself a diamond first, then get the ring made. The ring is pocket change compared to the centrestone.
Talk to me on MSN, i may be able to help u!

This is good advice. I think you're best off deciding on a ring, buying the rock(s) to suit and then getting someone to make it up for you. You can quite easily save thousands doing this, especially if you're modelling on an expensive tiffany & co type ring.
And to the person that said 'never buy from a jewellery store', I have yet to meet a woman that doesn't go nuts when they see that green tiffany & co box.

I proposed with a "temporary" ring. It was a very nice ring, and I searched for ages to find it as I knew she'd keep it forever anyway, and it eneded up costing $100 (on sale).
We're thinking of finding a diamond to put in it, so I'm going to do the diamond market and the shops in the city. But its been 5 months since I proposed (wedding in April) and we still havn't got it.
It looks so nice I should take it off her for a day then give it back and say "its got a diamond now".
I really think SHE should chose HER ring. Thats why I did the suprise "temporary" ring.

Pssht, since when is spending money on more important things that make both of us happy, instead of being superficial about a ring a cheapskate?
I personally thing its stupid going the other way. Shower her with love, and be thoughtful, she'll remember that for a lot longer.

After reading all the comments here I think I have worked out my problem a little clearer. In all terms of reality we have been going out for 6+ years, we have bourght a house and are currently landscaping it (which has been hard on both of us) we both have new cars, the house is nearly fully furnished, She has just completed her 8 years of study for her degree + CPA. If I had ever put plans to where I wanted to be in life at a certain age I am where I would have liked to be at age 35 when I am now 27 and I have her to thank for that. I know she would be happy with a tin ring from a coin-op machine as the gesture is still the same however I wouldn't be happy with that. I'd like to give her the world but, being an Accountant, she'd kill me after the initial surprise, So I'm looking for that balance that I'm happy with and that she'll love what I've created for her from me.

it may sound cheapskateish but what about a family airloom as an engagment ring ? that's what has been done in my family for ages.
Also think practical when buying the ring, my aunt has this big ring she can't wear because it's got sharp edges that get caught on stuff like loose threads.
I don't think price should have anything to do with it . Just buy what ever u think would suit her (within reason)

Damn some of you guys are cheap bastards...
$5k
AFAIK, 3 months wages is the accepted norm. But really, it's what will make the woman happy. I didn't spend anywhere near 3 months wages and I think she'd be very upset if I did.
As for the diamonds, look around and find a good price, then use that as a bargaining chip.
If it's a choice between colour and clarity, go for the colour. The naked eye can't tell the difference between VS1 and VS2 but can tell the difference between an F and a G...
Also, go for platinum. Gold makes a diamond look ugly, and white gold tarnishes. Platinum is da bomb. But does cost 2.6 times the price of gold...
Oh, and Tiffanies is a rort. I designed the ring and had it custom made by one of Australia's premier jewellers and it still came out at 2/3 the price of a similar spec Tiffanies ring.

Well I feel like a cheap skate but hey retail value was $1800 I just got it at those end of financial year sales lol, she had already picked it out once before.
As for price, its up to you, best thing would be is to have a max price and go look at some designs, see one you want, buy it, dont look at the price.
But as for style I can say this, if its too big it will cause problems, the amount of times my wife has scratched me with her damn engagemnet ring I cant count lol, as long as she likes it who cares how much it was.

if u want to put a price on things heres how u do it. and seeing as shes an accountant u may need it ...
its all relative....
yeah were all really impressed when someone spends $5000 on a ring.....but......how much d u have in the bank cheapskate...
disposable income is the key....after bills, tax, living costs etc how much is left?.....
eg if someone whos real pov and only has $50 left over at the end of the week, saved for a whole year he'd still only have $2500 at the end of it...but if u have $500 left over each week and already have $10000 in the bank then I dont think spending 5G is all that amazing...
also saving 3mths wages is fucking hard when u only make $500p/w.
so this 3mth thing is bullshit...
anyway I dont think its a ring u need to worry about, more like where do you get a noose......your thinly disguised brag reeks of a boring mainstreem suburban existance....but I wont rant anylonger ur missing changing rooms or backyard blitz or whatever dull married "keeping up with the jones" type couples do for "fun"........

Nark, yes I'm taking the colour over the clarity and size. the stone I am looking at is an F colour and vs2 clarity, ideal cut. However isn't the biggest diamond in the world. But I now she prefers prefection over size.
The figure that I put of $5000 is what I have been saving towards for the last 12 months or so. when you have a mortage, disposable income is non existant. I've been working a second job to put money away for this and $5000 is where I'm at. I've done my research into the subject and looked in jewellers windows armed with the knowledge of what style she wants and was looking at prices of the similar styles in the window. after finding somthing suitable and speaking to the jeweller about getting somthing coustom done I was expecting to see the budget sky rocket however the custom ring is a much better ring than the one that was in the window and that was on special. I am happy with the idea and I know she'll be happy with. I am looking to find a better diamond for it, but that isn't the end of the world. trying to find that balance is the between spending too much and getting killed and spending to little and me not being happy seems to be the issue but I'm a little more sure about what I'm looking for now.

There was a place that sold cheap diamonds in Chatswood called the Diamond Factory (I think) that had really good prices and should be near you.
Other than that, Cabramatta has good prices too that you could use to bargain with.
There are also a few places in Queensland.... hehe
Big diamonds are just bling. My opinion is that a 0.75 is big enough, any larger and it is too big. Unless it was an Emerald Cut...
0.75 G VS2 in a Princess Cut should set you back about $5k. Well, that's what they were selling for when I was looking. Brilliant Cut would cost less.
It's amazing to think that the little rock on my fiance's hand cost more than my Celica did when I first bought it...
Good luck dude. I'm sure she'll love it.
Decided how you're going to propose yet?
