worthwhile rebuilding gearbox? W58 Sat, 20 November 2004 12:23 Go to next message
Hi all,

I've recently fitted a supra 5 speed (w58 or 57 I think) into my 5L VS Statesman (yes a holden conformadore)

..anyway, the general consensus is that it has a reasonable chance of breaking. if not now-ish then sometime next year once I go to 6.3L (thats 383ci Very Happy )

So can I rebuild this box to be tougher?

Where do I get parts?

Is it worth it? (step-dad is a mechanic so don't factor in labour costs)

I paid $450 for the box so it's not a huge financial issue to replace it, I'd just rather have one that will withstand a little abuse (even if it costs a little extra to build). I knew the 5 speed wouldn't exactly be bulletproof but the cost of replacement made it an attractive proposition (and it is better than the crappy T5 fitted to holdens from the factory..)

cheers,
Jay

So long as you aren't brutal to it, it should hold the V8 fine. May have trouble with that 383ci though.

That said, if you really wanted a tough 5-speed, I'd be selling it to another Commodore owner and getting an R154.

the R154 is the supra turbo box?

is it a straight bolt up swap?

I was also told they are pretty hard to get?

heh Tremec TKO? yep bulletproof. If I had the cash for one I'd probably get a T56 though.

Yeah the R154 is referred to as the "supra turbo" box, came out behind 7M-GTE's and 1JZ-GTE's.

No, the input shaft is longer, and you require a different bellhousing to mount to the gearbox as well (different pattern).

They are expensive, around $1000->$1500. They also apparently have a 1st gear thrust washer issue which can lead to damage...?

Yeah mate definately go the r154. strong as buggery .

I currently have one behind the five litre in my ss.

Thanks guys.

I was looking at the cost of the r154 and a new bellhousing plus any misc stuff (there's always misc extra costs) and comparing that to rebuilding the w58 with some stronger running gear.

Taking into consideration the w58 is already in the car I think it'd be easier to keep it, either rebuilding one stronger or just swappin new ones in as they break.

or maybe just not abusing it as much, but thats not much fun Very Happy

I got most of my conversion gear from CRS, bought the box and some other misc parts locally. The CRS gear really went together quite well. The guy who helped me pretty well refuses to do these conversions with anything other than CRS gear.

Rebuilding a W58 with stronger internals (eg TRD gearset) will cost a fortune - way more than just replacing it with a stronger box. Either be gentle with the box you have or fork out for something different.
