MA61 Digidash dodgy speedo Sun, 21 November 2004 23:26 Go to next message
My digi speedo is going bonkers at certain speeds

At speeds like 50, 80 and up, it is perfect

But at certain speeds (especially 70kph) it chops and changes.

For instance, it goes from 64-71-65-70-66-70 etc etc, constantly.

Happens from about 64 to 76, then it settles down again.
Normally I wouldnt care, but it I plan to use cruise control, this wont help.

Now, is it just a stretched/worn speedo cable, or could the sensors in the analogue->digital convertor dirty or something?

Cheers

It may be the speedo cable or that there is a kink in it...

Mine does it but doesn't have that much variation that you have with your speeds.

Cheers.

Yeah speedo cable. Mine used to do this, then I swapped in a new cable and it was heaps better. Mind you it will never be perfect; it will jump around a bit, but it shouldn't be as bad as you describe.

Yeah, I expect 1-2km/h jumping, but not 5-7km/h

Over 90, its perfect.

Sounds like a new/replacement cable is in order.

Would it help to replace the grease in the cable at each end?
(Do they have grease there stock? or was this added to my Cressida afterwards?)

How much did the new speedo cable cost. I got a second hand one for my SA63 and cost me $30 and still going strong after 100,000kms

yup - new cable.

If it were me though... i would go directly to an electronic speed sender and try to work that into the electronic drive within the dash itself.

Hmmm, I like your thinking.
Especially considering most Toyota boxes have electronic outputs now.

Will investigate in a month or so.

Yep is usually the speedo.. although on the digi dash I have had a problem where the plastic mount to which the speedo cable attaches at the back of the dash was cracked...

The speed would jump around by like 8km per hour until around 120 where it would stop jumping about...

I thought about doing this until I realised the odometer wouldn't work any more since it's mechanical. Sad

So the mount on the cable (green I think it is) was cracked?
Hmm, must check mine.

I am trying to salvage mine as it oftn reads zero. I have another that has a good speedo, but stuffed water temp and fuel, so hopefully I can swap it around.

my digi dash does the same thing around 65 - 75 it sometimes jumps up and down quite abit, i put grease on the ends which helps it abit but a few weeks later its back to it old self.

The plastic mount youi connect the speedo cable to in the back of the dash... Its white if i remmember... It was cracked around the base... The mechanism behind it held it in place however... The crack did mean that there was some play in it however.. causing the irregular speedo reading below 120....

I used quicksteel on it and seemed to fix the problem nicely...
Very Happy
