Toymods Website Tue, 23 November 2004 01:30 Go to next message
I think that the toymods website could really do with a upgrade. I work for a web design company and I could offer a website for a pretty decent price. If any of the admins would like to contact me about it:

Guys,

The Toymods website is very much in need of ALLOT of reworking. Problem is we don't have anyone who is willing to DONATE their time and effort to bring it up to speed.

Jackel,

Your offer is very much appreciated but it is difficult with you being located in Parth. If you could attend the mmetings to discuss what has to be done we would have taken you up on the offer already Smile

Hey there, I can give you a hand in some html, asp, asp.net if you need.

If you could, try to find someone who can draw out the website on a jpeg, photoshop, and I'll try my best to slice the images up and code it into html, because I'm not a graphics designer.

I could probably donate some of my weekend, and after work hours.
Christmas is coming up, so and I can use some of the christmas holidays to work on this exercise if I get bored. Smiley =

There no time frame to get it done right?

Let me know what's needed, and I'll get back to you to see if I can do it.

Regards,
Tony

As personal opinoun the site is not very well sorted as it could of been. Front is kinda turn of when going to the forums. If it's going with a pre made software why not phpBB2 plus, then skin it down a little. Idk just a sugestion.

Well after my comments i was wonduring what people thought of something like this as a change? Im just trying things out. I designed it at 1280 by 1024 resloution by can change that. Links are ment to be in the blue box.

Current things to be worked on would be the logo?

Anyways here is the link:

can i add a few words of wisdom (i work in a group that does print & web publishing for gov't) - the visual design of a web site is the last step in the development process - i'd suggest that you:
-document the functionality of sections of the site and sections of pages
-develop a design rationale which addresses common themes and purpose for visual items
-get agreement on all of that stuff
-design and test it (the design)
-test the functionality

We have to develop sites and content that is accessible (e.g. work with screen readers, easily searched and navigated, work with images disabled, etc) - hence when you start doing layouts that require certain browsers or screen size, you've failed before getting off the ground.

I was going to design it of php. Calling parts from the top of the source. ( make it easier to edit )

Looks pretty much the same agreed but what should be done? I would think a custom forum would make this site look like magic aswell as limit Bandwidth usage.

To me the site is to dakr especially the forums.

yes i was already aware thechuckster
i run my own IT business which we specilise in website creation, etc..

lol by the way u write it u make it seem like hard work.

a nice limited graphical layout will be created and possibly may work on a forum layout. depending on the owners of toymods and what they decide to do

I would be against iFrames for the site, simply because most people on here are not IT people. Indeed i think it would be fair to say that most wouldnt even have the fastest computer, nor would have any care for iFrames or Flash, even if it did speed up the loading. THe biggest thing with this site will be cross browser and backwards compatibility. Without these many people wont be able to view the site.

Lets keep the site nice and simple.

Imo, no need for iframes.

The forums could go in a window of its own instead of in a frameset .
Ever try refreshing when browsing the forums, it refreshes the you back to the main page.

I say lets get rid of frames.

I'll be coding using css, xhtml. So that should also help in loading the pages quicker.

Again, CSS and XHTML are still not fully implemented in the latest release of IE, let alone any previous releases. To put it bluntly this needs to be HTML 4.01 Strict.

www.toyota.com.au are using xhtml so it can't be that bad.

Most of the tags you need will work fine on ie5, 5.5, 6. If they don't there are work arounds.

Id offer my HTML servies also.

Flash on toymods?
no thanks.

The site needs to be simple yet impressive looking (but not over the top or riced up). It needs to be functional and easy to browse.
And lets not kid ourselves, the forums are the main reason everyone comes here. But everything else could be set out so much better.

Re: Toymods Website Sat, 18 December 2004 03:07 Go to previous messageGo to next message
my 2c worth...

this site's pretty damn good compared to most places:
-most of the screen real estate is devoted to content (instead of big sigs, interface chrome, etc that waste content space)
-predictable code (same results with Safari, Firefox, IE)
-low code payload (very little client-side processing)
-functionality is obvious, predictable and sound

i'd be reluctant to change any of it without considering why unwanted features aren't here and the benefits/demand for these newer features.

It's the content that makes this site so great - so i'd be careful that any modifications only improve that 'greatness'.

the only issues i regularly face are:
-server performance when editing my posts (which is out of the scope of a redesign project)
-dependance on the adserver for page display
-better caching of frequently used graphics (the icons in left column)
-poor search behavior (needs to change from date sorting/listing to hit/success listing like normal search tools and AND searches dont work for me)
-safari wont do the login form/submit when behind an NT firewall

the accessibility issues the project should address include:
-removing frames from toymods website
-using CSS for positioning and layout not tables (would reduce payload to browsers)

but personally, i like the way the site looks now - i come here for the information and random flame-wars - if i want bling, i'll look at boostcruising Wink

Pretty simple making it work with all browsers expect Opera.
I'm yet to see a fully Opera compatabile site yet. Smile
No iframes as their hidous.

Things i've sat down and thought about that can be done:

All in one control panel ( So that means that there will be one control panel custom designed for Toymods. It will control the forum itself and the front of the site. )
For the front control panel i can add numourus things, one feature would be rss feeds and so forth. Also the text on the front of the site.

A better IP banning system. You may have one on the forum but i don't think there is one for the front of the site. New system will ban them of front and forum. Smile

Search Engine for the front of the site. I *might* be able to join the forum search and front site search togather.

I can do the whole lot of what i've said just give me 2 days or so. Smile

As for the layout / images id prefer someone else to do it as that isn't my area. All the work wthat i do is done in PHP/Mysql/CSS.

Edit: All the features can custimized to suit the way you'd like them so there is no fixed way.

i dont think we are interested in chaging the looks or functionality of the forum is it is a pre-packaged forum, mabye at a later date we will give it a new layout but that isnt in the plans as of yet.

i can see everyone is looking in the interest of the people that are not so computer littert which is good but by doing so we seem to be servely restricting the functionality and/or expandablity of the website. we need to decide what bare minimum specifications will be before we can design on coding and design methods.

i hope to see all that is interested in the website at the meeting tonight so we can discuss in person. i have started a thread in Cruises forum about tonight, be sure to check it out, hopefully we can meet on castle hill macca's before hand and all cruise up together
