have you tried repco.. i'm no expert when it comes to the price of those things, but repco is the place to go for aftermarket parts. give them a go.
but i do know rings, bearings and everything else is expensive, but it shouldn't be that expensive.

Heyah. The price you are quoting is that just the supply of parts or are you quoting for someone to pull out you engine and do the job.
If it is a pull out and they do similar to the breakdown given above then this is about right.
If they are just going to put in new bits then you are being ripped as it will fail quickly.
Use the breakdown as a refernce and get it items. or go to another company.
The work in the breakdown is extensive and well priced.
I would maybe go to them and also asked for some sort of warranty on the work as they should cover doing it all again.
As you have paid for it all.

As a small aside, Repco made many of the original equipment parts for the australian built Corollas. CV joints and the like.
just thought i'd share...

I was quoted about $460 (from memory) for a genuine gasket kit alone by Toyota and that was trade price. Rings and bearings can't cost another $1500.

I would most definitely not buy genuine toyota parts, it's just too expensive, I can't give a quote, but parts from some kind of aftermarket supplier would be way cheaper, and probably of similar quality - depending how much you are willing to part with.
A copper head gasket isn't that expensive, probably under $200 from some place like Ridgecrest (?) and they are pretty good quality, my dad/bro use one in their rally car.
