3TGTE in T18, Radiator and other issues Wed, 24 November 2004 02:33 Go to next message
I'm changin my 3TGTE from my RA60 to a T18, I'm putting on a GT28 and planning on putting out around 150RWkWs. With the stock radiator will I be able the thrash the crap out of it continually with out it getting too hot?? or should I try and fit the RA60 radiator??

Also the gearbox mount, any idea which ones I need to use?? will the T18 ones work?? or the mount from a TA63??

wouldn't hurt to at least clean/flush the TA radiator - but i'd be checking that the inlet/outlet ports are in the same/similar spot.

if you're going to all the effort of a new turbo, custom install etc then a newish cooling system would eliminate any coling-system-related teething problems.

also, if your avator is actually you, i'd be shaving off that mullet - it'll reduce the cooling load on your brain.

Yeah i ditched the mullet 6 months ago it was definately good tho, I think i will try and drop in the RA60 radiator, the engine never got warm in that car.

Any ideas about the gearbox mount??

What gearbox are you using? If W55-58, you will need to fabricate a gearbox mount. If you have a T50, the standard T18 mount will fit right up.

The 3TGTE only ever got hot in my T18 during extended dyno sessions, never on the street, with 160rwkw, and a standard (but reconditioned) T18 factory radiator with intercooler mounted in front of it.

Thanks heaps TE72_Turbo, exactly what I needed!!

I have a W55 and I have a cuchsion button clutch that is brand new. Can I just bolt up a T50 and keep the clutch?? I have mint condtion T50 in my garage and that W55 isnt in such good nick. Also could a T50 handle 150-160RWkWs??

It won't stay mint for long with 150rwkW.

150 is not hard to achieve. 320hp Garrett, decent manifold and exhaust, larger injectors, aftermarket ecu, intercooler and 16-17PSI will get it there.

EDIT/ Oh I forgot - standard radiator with 3 row core + thermo will cope easily. My Corolla radiator did the job fine except (like TE72 Turbo said) when pushed on the dyno.

Yeah, like these guys said, T50 wont be happy for long with 150kw. I went through 3 of them, then upgraded to the W55 once I ran out of spare gearboxes Smile I modded an RA23 gearbox crossmember to fit the T18 floorpan & W55 box.

Jason: When's your next visit to WSID? I'm keen to see some racing since they still can't commit to building us a track here in the politicians capital.

T50 sure won't like you.. a couple of years ago, my car made a miserly 141 at the wheels, and on the way home ripped all the teeth off 2nd gear Evil or Very Mad

With the cooling system, you can improve the overall efficiency a lot by messing with the pump etc., you can beef up the rad, or you can do both. I've found the two worst things for heat are the dyno and the track - if your car starts overheating in traffic, it's usually because there's something wrong.
