Now, I've whinged over and over about the programming of the traffic lights in Canberra ever since I came down here, but now that I have a car with a trip meter that displays fuel consumption, I can finally see how bad it is!
Average in Canberra: 13.8-14.2
Average in Sydney (driving up and down the Hume Hwy between Casula and Cabramatta with air con on): 12.2
That's pretty shocking considering that there are bugger-all lights in Canberra apart from Northbourne. And there's no traffic...

Not so sure about Canberra but I'm sure the lights sync on Old Windsor Rd could be done better. for the 35km trip to work in the morning the average speed for the trip is about 34km/h fuel consumption in my car is around 16.8-17-3 and the trip takes just over an hour if there hasn't been an accident. When I was working the split shift and travelling late at night and early in the morning (and against the traffic flow) the average speed goes to 54km/h, the fuel consumption goes down to 11.7-12.5 and the trip takes about 1/2 an hour. That is a big difference and the traffic that accumulates on Old Windsor Rd seems to get second treatment to all the roads comming into it. Ie the Norwest intersection during peak hour only lets about 10 cars through at a time some mornings, and the side street doesn't even have cars at the intersection.
I have a theory that the governmet allows this to get us to use more fuel to get more revenue from fuel sales. It's all a conspiracy...

Stuff the fuel consumption... its the red light speed camera's that suck down there!
I reckon those things are going to increase the number of accidents because people will hit their brakes hard instead of the usual accellerate through the orange!
