4AGZE GEARBOX SHIFTING PROBS Wed, 24 November 2004 03:27 Go to next message
Doods,

Need some ideas on oil and fixes for a 4 AGZE gear box.

Its in an OZ spec AW-11, i believe the engine and gear box are out of a 94 Levin AE-101.

The shift is crap when cold better when its warmed up and good when raced. The main problem is 1 st and 2nd gear (i have heard the syncros are a problem in these boxes ??) Toyota have reccommended a 75W-90 oil so will see how that goes but has anyone got any other suggestions ?

I have also read somewhere about a different set of syncros to fix this prob does anyone know where to get them from ?

Thanks,

Scott

dude - it would take you some SEVERE abuse to break an E series box, these are the same series as used in GT4 celicas, behind 3S-GTE's and 4A-GZE's.

As for the 1st-2nd gear change thing... well thats a matter of opinion and shit. The most common advice i get is try a different oil - a full synthetic 75W-90 like Guklf Western "waterclear" or Castrol "Synrtax" might help fix the problem.

In fact my friend who has an St185 is VERY happy with the improvments in shift from 1st--->2nd gear when he changed to the Gulf western waterclear full sythetic gearbox oil.

The problems are caused by the synchro's which inevitably wear out in almost all gearboxes.

Also quite often people don't ever change their gearbox oil, however, it should be changed approx every 20,000kms in most cars according to factory service intervals.... yes I know its expensive stuff but it is cheaper than a gearbox or diff rebuild.

Dood,

Thanks for the quick reply !

I have some Syntrax allready on order so keen too see how it goes.

What have you heard about the 2nd gear syncros on these 4 AGZE boxes.

My naturally aspirated 4AGE MR-2 box is fine after much racing ( it is also running Syntrax.

It only has about 1/2 the power to deal with however compared to the supercharged engine!!!

Regards,

Scott

The E series boxes which are used in the GT4's, GZE's etc. are known for chewing through synchro's.

Also when you've got a heavy arsed rig like a gt4 and a high reving engine you are more likely to keep the rev's up which causes more wear on the synchro's.

Appreciate the info !

Do you have any contacts on who can put some new syncros in it for me in Sydney, if the new oil does not help.

Preferebly someone who may have worked on these boxes before ?

Also do you know how different thede boxes are compared to the NA 4 AGE box ?

Thanks,

Scott

Never actually got one rebuilt myself... I have all the manuals for it but haven't found the need as yet.
Do a yellowpages.com.au search for gear box and you should get a few listings.

Note: I have never used any of these companies so do some shopping around and get yourself a good deal... usually you can tell if they know their stuff because of the number and types of cars in their carpark.

boxes are VERY VERY VERY VERY different to a 4age C series box. Its like comparing a T50 and a W58!!

C52s weigh about 20kg... E58's weigh more like 50kg!!
