i have a 89 supra 1ggte imported from japan with 104ks on the clock.. just got the car so im going to do a full service on it.. my mechanic says go for castrol magnatech.
however after doing a search on this on this site magnatech doesnt sound so good. i was wonder if there are any other people with 1ggte's out there that could tell me wat oil they use and how good it is and what oil to stay away from

I've used Mobil 1 for years. Cold starts are tappetty for half a second or so, so it's a bit thin in that regard.
But I'm happy with using it.

I've only used mobil 1 so far, but next oil change i'm going to try another synthetic oil. Toyota's are pretty good with oil, they tend to not burn/leak as much as some other car brands Synthetic is better for a turbo engine anyway.

Ive only ever used Mobil 1 on my car...Thats 2 oil changes in less then 2 months, damnit i drive too much!!
While we're on the subject...what is the best viscosity? I think both tims i used the smaller one...5W10...Ive heard that it doesnt matter too much, but still curious.
Cheers, Jon

GUYS YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER TOLERANCE HERE
i think the factory recomendation was 1ow for the 1g
but remember the car was made in the later 80s the engines werent made to finer tolerances that exist now , so thinner oil will most likely get squeezed out the rings and all due to the tolerance also the car is pro alredy worn the engine down a bit which makes it wiser to use thicker oil
id say go for 15 or 20w
ive tried almost all of the oil in my 1g
5w-50 mobil 1 and 10w-60 castrolo bothfull synthetic gave me very harsh cold starts in winter no tappet noise though
then went with 15w-?? semi synthetic penrite was getting better
now have 20w-60 non synthetic penrite oil and car is happy makes the tappet noise in the start in winter but goes away once driven and is quiet as a mouse
all these test were done with a stuffed thermostst in winter so car wasnt warming enuf even after driving as the thermo was stuck open all the time so i duno weter now with a new thermostat the car will behave any differently on the thinner oils
i will have to try it out again
cheers

I'm of the theory, use the lowest viscosity oil that my car is happy to run on and doesn't burn. If it gets squeezed through the rings, I'd be missing oil and I'll change it.
