make sure the terminals are clean for starters then the earth.
next i would be testing voltage on the battery and alternator.
does the light change when you put on your lights or accessories?
doesnt it only come up when running cold?

as has been said check for normal operation - good contacts and connections etc
then check working status - voltmeter on battery and alternator
from what u hav said - faint charge light, it would be a common alternator service - the alternator brushes are worn and need replacing.
there are 3 types of brushes
- easy plug pack replacement > bosch altern ( screw out and in )
- harness pack > denso altern??? ( solder in new brushes to
harness )
- internal brushes > other altern??? ( a painful bastard to
replace )
i would always recommend converting to bosch!
let me know wat brushes u have...

you've answered your own question.
Voltage drop my friend.
My battery's in my boot and I seem only to get around 12.8V now.
I even tried running a earth to the engine bay but that didn't seem to anything.
I've love to get 14v or whatever it is out of my battery again. the lower voltage affects a few little things in my car.

You could also get those terminals from jaycar that tells you the voltage just to keep an eye on it.

12.8V is not good, you need better cables
if the light has started to be faintly on, it could also be a field diode failing.. i've had the solder shake apart on many an alternator.. the voltage will go down to maybe 12.5 or even 11.8..
BUT
with one of those 10 LED battery voltage monitor kits from jaycar, you can see the LED's flashing up and down... if it is just the brushes, then the voltage is low and stays low.. with field diodes, it jumps around.
the LEd meter is one fo the most useful alternator test devices ive ever used.. and it's only about $15

but Stewart have you got your battery mounted in the boot?
would there be some voltage drop? that's what my auto electrician put it down to.

Heya Rob, hmm i should finally visit you i've just built mine into a dash console, but we could hook it up to yours before i install it.... early next week sometime?
nope, my battery is not in boot, but what i'm saying is that it is normal to have 13.5-14.5V to charge your 12-12.5V car battery.. if you only have 12.8, it's not going to charge much into a 12.5V batt...
what is the resistance of the battery cables? you have both positive and negative leads running to engine bay? etc etc
surely you'd want over 14V at the battery?
