Scales.... for weighin pistons n stuff Fri, 26 November 2004 10:10 Go to next message
Heya guys

Im goign to be starting my new engine build in the new year, and i want to get a good set of accurate scales for weighing things like pistons, conrods etc etc for the blueprinting.
Was just wondering what people use, and where to get them from. I was thinking a scientific equipment suppliers. As i had a quick peek at Jaycar and DSE and they only had <3kg +- 0.05 scales, or much less accurate <200kg scales.

I guess i woudl be after <10kg i guess. Anyone got some ideas on that side of things?

+-0.01kg but max of 2kg generally
Im looking for like +-0.01g or even 0.001 if possible.

i use the ones at work.. they are accurate to .1grams. They were about $500 from memory

I don't think you will get 0.01 or 0.001 unless you spend a real fortune

Heh i was looking at you Paul.

I seem to remember the 0.01g accuracy ones we had at school being around 300ish. Inflation sucks.

You could find the chem labs at your local university...

Also, from memory, scales I used that had a degree of accuracy down to what you're chasing were boxed to stop air movement from changing the measurement, and only weighed up to 50gms or so.

Yes, these were boxed. Didnt realise only 50gm though.

Not sure, may measure higher, but I'd say trying to find anything more than 500g at an affordable price would be fairly optimistic.

we're really concerned about balance & equalizing each other, and not their actual weight, right?? what difference does it make what they are.
then a simple balance beam will find the lighest pretty easy.
a stick with a hook on each end, and a string in the middle to hold it up & pivot on, will do OK for this.

analytical balances we use in chem can measure .0001g up to 500g, they have covers around them to stop air movement etc. very expensive.

we also use 5kg ones that have a resolution of 0.01g, these would be fine for what your looking at doing. they shouldn't cost you more than a couple of hundred dollars.

but as allencr said, you are only really interested in the relative weight difference between different parts. not an absolute measurement so you could get away with using cheaper balances.

In this case it does matter. Im going to the next level from just building an engine. I want to test structural stresses on conrods and stuff. For that i need to know pretty precise weights for the pistons as then i can calculate the forces etc.

accuracy costs Wink

also look to the manufacturer of the post office scales...

when i was looking for a 500gm 0.01gm scale i was looking at around $600-800...
