My mx62 (cressida) makes a noise that...I've adjusted the timing just under the rocker head cover to the specs that the Haynes manual i have specifies... she idles ok without pinging but after i rev the car the pinging comes after i take my foot off on the deceleration... does anyone have any ideas what the problem is here?

"Pinging" (ie detonation) only happens under load, so your engine isn't pinging. It's pretty hard to diagnose your problem without being able to hear it, but at a guess I'd say there's something amiss in the bottom end, eg dud big end bearing. M engines are known for these sort of problems as they get older.

instead of "ping", how about the "zap"or "snap" or "crackle" you hear from high voltage electricty jumping an air gap.
plug wires, else i'm with Norbie.

there was a very similar misleading description in a recent post.

i appreciate the advice...it could the bearing thing that Norbie
said...perhaps I'm not saying the right sort of noise.. my friend said it sounds like a slight backfire after deceleration.

Hmmm the plot thickens... you adjusted the timing and now it backfires? Sounds like you screwed up the timing, get someone to check it for you!

mate if it is wasn't doing it before you did the timing then you have done something wrong. why did you change it anyway? Rolling Eyes

in reply to tojo: good point, i wouldn't touch it if i didn't believe it was broken to begin with... the noise has lessoned from a louder rattling on idle(noise used to come and go) after i tampered with it so it seems i haven't worsened the problem.

I appreciate all input so thanks for your post tojo
