Networking help

I have little understanding of computer networking, but here goes;
I want to connect my xbox up to xbconnect via my laptop. With my limited resources and inclination to spend $$, I want to know if the following is possible, in terms of connectivity;
Cable modem
USB cable
Laptop
(software router?)
Patch cable
Network Switch
Patch cable
Xbox
IF this is possible, I need leads on where to get a software router, if anyone else is using one? I've tried download.com, but i don't know exactly what i'm looking for, and need something relatively simple.
Cheers, Matt

It's a shame you have a USB modem. That just makes it harder as you could have bought a new router/switch instead.
All I can suggest is to enable ICS (internet connection sharing), if you are running windows XP on the laptop that is. This would sit in the position of "software router" in your list.

The modem can connect via usb or ethernet, i just thought i'd have to utilise the usb connection to free up the ethernet port on the latop, and the switch my brother bought for his xbox party fetish. I just thought i may be able to use it that way...
Maybe an easier way would be
Cable modem
USB
Laptop
ICS
Homemade x-over cable
Xbox
???

matt, you should be aiming for something like:
Cable modem
USB cable (urrgh)
laptop USB port
software FIREWALL!!!
ICS enabled on laptop ethernet port
normal ethernet cable to 10/100 switch
10/100 switch (that does not routing or anything clever)
normal ethernet cable to Xbox
i would suggest not using the laptop while using ISC - simply to prevent any performance issues.
If can swing it, find a PCMIA card with ethernet port and connect the cable modem to that rather than USB - will be much faster.
cheers,
Charles.

Ah yes, I'll give that a go, cheers Charles. Now to scavenge some cables and a pcmcia card...
