Where to buy where to buy portable air conditioning units? Mon, 29 November 2004 01:07 Go to next message
Getting prepped for a trip to Melbourne, just wondering what is available out there as the car has no air conditioning, and i was getting burnt like a mofo on the weekend.

I've got a power invertor 12V-240V so anything that will handle the car's capability would do me fine.

I seen those house fans with the water condensor units on them, but i'm wondering if there are smaller units that work like house air cons?

You'd probably be lucky to find one that will work in the operating capacity of the inverter ie. the one I have is rated to 150w, whereas most portable airconditioners need the whole hog (2400w)

yeah thats what i thought Confused although im thinking if those house fans with water condensors acually blow out cold air, would that be sufficient?
Cuz as far as i'm aware fans don't drain alot of power

Well, this one:
http://www.ixl.com.au/bonaire_ultra_spec.html

Uses 125w, so its probably doable. How useful it is really depends on the type of heat you'll be facing; ie "dry" heat, or humidity.

You could go ultra povo style (an idea i once entertained for my camira (shudder)) and get misting nozzles, a container of water, washer pump, and a fan.

It'll just be messy and wet. But cool.

another idea i thought of is to just cover my whole interior with garbage bags except for steering wheel/hanbrake/knob and buy 10kg of ice at the servo just before we leave, then i'll just scatter the stuff everywhere! ahhaaha

*driving half way*
*convoy suddenly sees me trailing further behind*
*i'm out of sight*
*convoy stops and radios in*
*Des, whats up?!*
*no reply*
*you there man*
*no reply*
*someone drives back to find me in a freeze, purple and shaking*

With des' Air conditioning schemes it definately is going to be one hell of a good time.

Actually I like the Re-routing of the windscreen washer idea. (just get like the mistcaps off bathroom cleaner bottles) and attatch them to the end, and then you'll have windscreen washer mist..

Maybe you could put gatorade in the washer bottle and it could dub as a tasty type of mist. Laughing

des got scared when a xr6 ute with aircon pulled up next to him and tried to battle him on the highway and all the bugs got caught in his eyes hence he let the xr6 go, so now des must take revenge by getting aircon to rebattle the xr6 on the highway again

Hey Guys,

Sorry to ruin this thread with a half serious post but...

Try um, I think auto pro. (is that the yellow / black retail auto outlet ?) They have a unit made by 'lion' i think. Its portable 12v / 240v fan with water sprayer thing. $80. Enjoy. If it's any good let us know!

Sam.

having " sold " the lion ones before - they are a piece of shit -not worth the effort guys ..

any of those inside fan things , you could probaly sneeze and have greater cooling effect ..

2/60 Aircons your best option - 2 windows down - 100KMH

And a towel over you to evaporate some heat off.

OOR start saving for an aftermarket aircon setup for your cars
