Cressida 5M-E won't go into overdrive when warm?

My grandparents have an 84 Cressida which is having overdrive issues.
When starting the car from cold the box seems to change 'OK' (albeit won't change into overdrive till about 3,200rpm at 80 clicks). Drive it around for a few minutes and stop (eg at traffic lights) and after that it refuses to go into overdrive.
Fluid levels have been checked (when warm) and are OK. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Fluid levels were checked when car was running?
Is the kickdown cable too slack?
The tranny you have doesn't have any/much sensor input, so it sounds like the tranny might just be fcuked/on its way out.

theres a temp sender that when it gets over about 60 degrees water temp it allows the overdrive to work
either faulty sensor
or faulty wiring

The auto DOES changed into overdrive - but it seems only when cold.
Apparently if you start the car from cold and drive up the road, it WILL go into overdrive.
Changes 1st to 2nd at approx 2,000 rpm
2nd to 3rd at approx 2,800 rpm
3rd to overdrive at approx 3,200 rpm
The car will downchange OK if you accelarate hard, and then changes bac into overdrive OK. You can drive for 10+ kays and it's still OK.
However..... bring the car to a standstill - then try to take off again and it REFUSES to change up into overdrive.
The fluid levels were checked warm and when the car was running in 'PARK'. He has already changed the box once and this box does the exact same thing.
Freak'n weird!
