cleaning air filter Fri, 11 October 2002 22:28 Go to next message
Hi
I have a 5 inch UNI filter Pod
What is the best way to clean it, its looking a little black.
Also the best re-oiling method.
Thanks guys.
also, how do you protect the filter from road spray and engine bay grime? without restricting air flow to it.

Auto One you can by filter fix oil, which is the oil your meant to put on your unifilters, it has cleaning instructions on the bottle but usually just wash with kero then apply oil all over the filter and keep folding the filter and squashing it to remove any excess oil.

Use a whole bottle (2L) of turps to clean it, half to get the bulk of the dirt out & other half for a good rinse.
When you go to re-oil it, I find the oil way too thick, & once your engine bay heats up all the excess oil drips down to the bottom of your filter & into your engine bay.

Next time I do mine I'm gonna mix up a bottle of about 2:1 turps to oil that I can pour out into a bowl, soak the filter in & give it a good wring out, then pour it all back into the bottle for next time.
It'd prolly be a good idea to let the filter sit outside for a while for the turps to evaporate a bit though.....

When I picked up my filter from uni-filter in Hornsby, I watched them oil it & they dunked it in a bucket & gave it a good squeeze, & it definitley wasn't straight filter fix oil. It looked & sounded like a very diluted mix.

pretty sure they say kerrosene, petrol is fine to wash them out with, i find wax & grease remover to be the best as it gets rid of any trace of old oil but don't use acrylic thinners Laughing makes the filters go twice the size even though they go back to normal size after a while i'm sure its not doing any good to the filter, also when you wash the filters let them dry first before you put the oil on otherwise it wont stick to the filter.

and don't tip whatever you used to wash them out until after you finish oiling the filter as that filter fix oil is the most sticky oil in the universe and you will need to wash it off your hands afterwards so i just dunk my hands in the tub i used to clean the filters. Smile

Actually the instructions say turps (petrol & kero is for burning), & they also say to mix the oil 50:50 with turps to oil the filter. So I was close.
