Low & High beam? Sat, 12 October 2002 03:39 Go to next message
Hi all...

Is there any reason why in a dual filament headlight globe, that the low *and* high beam filaments cant be turned on together?

On nearly every car ive seen, when you flick from low beam to high beam, the low beam turns off and the high beam turns on.

Im just wondering if they do this to stop the globes from overheating from both filaments being turned on.

Thanks.

Yeh.. The globes will get extremely hot.. also it would be too much of a current strain on your electrical wiring.. Definate burn out... Dont do it man. Unless you wanna be cruising through town with flames bellowing out from your engine bay/interior etc..

Well electrical isnt a problem as its currently being changed anyway.

The headlights are halogen replacements for ther original sealed beams.

You'll get no gain by doing this so I wouldn't bother!

Hey All...

If you want depth in driving with the highlights on why don't you invest yourself in Driving lights for brighter depth of field with the highlights on or Fog lights for depth of field for low lights?

I changed my Headlight bulbs and added Driving lights so if anyone highlights me... I highlight back and they get the picture and they drop the lights, though night turns into day...

That is my 2 cents Rolling Eyes

Cheers

The headlights are halogen replacements for ther original sealed beams.

The car in question is actually mine. The car originally had 4 single filament sealed beam headlights.. I have since replaced all four with Hella units, the centre pair are sealed beam single filament high beam units, the outers are now dual filament with built in parker globes.

The parker is wired up on the outer pair, as is the dipped beam filament.

What MWP and I are looking for is some information regarding setting up something so that on switching to high beam, the outer's use the high beam filament. The switch on the column is not designed as such so another system needs to be devised.

Thanks for your help guys.

Use the wire from the switch to trigger relays to turn on the high beams. Use thick wire directly from the battery and a heavy duty relay.

Something like this should do the trick.
