Ignition Coil Question

Does anyone know why the coil on the 1G-GTE has 3 wires? I've always seen 2 wire coils, and I just checked my buddy's 7M non turbo motor, and his is 2 wire also. I don't know if the 3 wire coil is from the 5M or the 1G, but I want to upgrade my coil to a high output such as an MSD, but the whole 3 wire thing is making it hard to determine which coil to get. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks- Armin

That's what I'm thinking too, but I haven't been able to confirm it. I wish I could find a schematic. BTW, for whatever reason, with the 1G motor, my tach and speedo do not work. If it is a tach wire, and my tach dosn't work anyways, then a MSD TFI coil for a 5.0 mustang would work, I believe.

how about.. internal resistor.
when starting the coil is powered by the non-resistor terminal, and when running is powered by the resistor terminal.
measure the resistance with a multimeter between the three terminals and tell us what you find.

Grant wrote on Wed, 01 December 2004 01:29 | The 1GGTE coil is unique as it has a split primary winding. Looking at the circuit diagram, the igniter has the ability to power either side of the primary coil independantly. I assume it does this to fire another spark shortly after the first, probably in an attempt to ignite unburnt vapour and improve emissions.
As part of this process the igniter send two signals back to the ecu to tell it the coil has fired correctly. Unfortunately you are going to run into problems fitting an aftermarket coil or ignition unit as the factory ecu still needs to get these signals or injection will stop.

Hmm, just what I needed to hear, but not what I wanted to hear. So both a coil or something like an MSD 6AL or a MSD 6BTM will not work? I'm wondering if both of the 2 coil fire wires from the oem coil can be wired into the 1 side of the aftermarket coil? I'm not sure about the logistics of this, but I wonder if that would at least get signal to the ecu.

Difficult to know what the igniter would do in that instance. Maybe talk to MSD and explain the problem; they might have a solution.
