Check this beast of a ta24 out... i want a jdm stang back celica now
http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m648 5076
hehe tried posting it on nissansilvia.com to see the responses... like 4 ppl could appreciate what it was. Im sure u ppl will appreciate it alot more though.
for those who dont know, its a very very rare ta24 celica, complete with 2tg, built in very small numbers in 1974, as a sort of tryout for the mustang back style, ofcourse they later came out with the ra28 (with the later longer nose and different style rear lights) which sported the 2L 18R (18RG's in the gt models. This is the first "ST" ta24 ive ever seen before, interestingly it sports the GT extras aswell.
enjoy

yup, drooooollllll.
mmmmmm, rare old school celica. looks very similar to RA25, same taillights and same? bonnet, just different engine as far as i can tell.
wish i could bring myself to put guards like that on my TA23, would certainly be different over here, not sure about parking it though
cheers

Hi,
No, it's a TA27, ST variant.
There were two models - the TA27 and the RA25
The TA27 had the 2T series engines and the RA25 had the 18R series engines. Both vehicles came out in LT, ST and GT variants. There was no ET or GTV version of these cars.
This particular vehicle should have a 2T-B engine (being an ST - 'cos only the GT version had the 2TG engine), but it appears the owner has replaced the 2T-B with the 2TG engine. Looks a little suspect 'cos the engine bay piping is not normal for that series engine and model.
This model, judging by the "5 speed" badge just under the left-side reverse lights makes it a mid/late 1974 (or later) version. Prior to that there wasn't such a badge.
The TA27/RA25 series are JDM only vehicles and were manufactured from 1973 to 1975, then came the RA28.
The 1973 to mid/late 1974 versions had the running script "Celica" badge on the side and no badging with "5 Speed" or "EFI" on the rear like this one does. Also, the mid/late 1974 models had the side "Celica" badge in block script.
This car is missing the honeycomb ST/GT grille which is a shame and the rear foil bolted to the back of the car is a bit ordinary. The car already has the aerodynamics at the rear with out ricing it with this sort of shit.
The fender mirrors are non-standard. The original fender mirrors are silver/grey in colour and round in shape.
I'm trying to figure out what happened to the exhaust pipe. It should be sticking out at the left rear, but I don't see anything.
Now, if you want to see a hellaciously fine example of a 1973 RA25, GT version, check out http://www.classic-celica.com/modules.php?set_albu mName=ra25aus&op=modload&name=gallery& file=index&include=view_album.php
This RA25 has now been fitted with original JDM fender mirrors but no photos have been taken yet. I'll get them done asap.
Prior to the TA27/RA25 series was the SV-1 prototype liftback, of which you can search on the net and see a fine example of one in the Toyota museum. The TA27/RA25 series were the first production version of the Celica liftback.

Althought he car is very rare, I can't imagine it being worth anything as it has been so butchered! 1 thing I have to say though is that I prefer the tail lights of the RA25/TA27 compared to the RA28!

Yanno, although I'm all for keeping these things original - being so rare and all, I kinda agree with you on this.
This poor old thing would be a bitch to get back to full JDM original specs. So, I'd give it the works with some mods. Billet grille, nice V8, and spec it out to the max. If possible I'd try to keep the interior pretty much original (depending upon what condition it is), but yeah, it looks angry now and I'd make it absolutely freaking livid!
It'd be nice to have and make a nice partner to the original RA25 I've got. Man, wouldn't they look sweet sitting together in my garage!

No, I only know about the TA27/RA25 series. Having owned an RA25 for 22years, and them being so rare (outside Japan) I have had to find out all this stuff for myself and to keep the old girl running and looking nice.
I don't know much about the RA28 or TA22 or RA23. I know even less about the Coronas, Corollas or Crowns.
So, each time I see something about the TA27/RA25 I check it out and try and clarify any ommisions or whatever.
I couldn't honestly tell you about the RA28 badging or production mods/changes during its short, but wonderful production life.

Hi,
You mean 18RG, not 18RB don't you? I've never heard of an 18RB engine, and I would assume it to be a SOHC. This one definately is a twin-cam engine.
The radiator looks fairly new compared to the rest of the engine bay and maybe a recent replacement.
The spark-plug leads should be routed over the top of the engine at the front, through a small plastic thing to hold the leads. Also there should be another lead retainer on the front of the engine. The spark plug leads are all over the place in this one. I'm also a bit confused by the feul filter looking thing near the radiator. That's not normal placement for an 18RG - well, not on these models anyway. The 18R-G water thermostat housing is just above the dizzy (driver side), but in the 2T-G it's at the front of the engine, on the passenger side.
Assuming it's a TA27... the following models and engines are as follows...
TA27-K, TA27-M and TA27-H had the 2T engine - these are the LT versions.
TA27-MZ and TA27-MZR had the 2T-B and 2T-BR engines respectively and are the ST variant
TA27-MQ and TA27-MQR had the 2T-G and 2TG-R engines, respectively. This is the GT variant.
If it's an RA25....
RA25-K, RA25-M and RA25-H had the 18R engine. This is the LT variant.
RA25-ME had the 18R-E (EFI) engine. This is the ST variant, but I say that with some reservation. I'll need to do some more checking out on this.
RA25-MQ and RA25-MQR had the 18R-G and 18R-GR engines, respectively. These are the GT versions.
-K means 4speed manual, -M means 5speed manual, -H means 3speed automatic. So, a TA27-M is a 2T engine with 5speed box.
The TA27-MZ, -MZR, -MQ and -MQR had a 5speed box. The gear ratios and diff ratios are the same across these models.
The RA25-ME, -MQ and -MQR had 5speed boxes also. However the gear and diff ratios on the -ME are different from those of the -MQ and -MQR. The -MQ and -MQR had the same gear and diff ratios.
I'd hazard a guess that this is a late build (ie mid/late 1974 to 1975) TA27-MZ (or TA27-MZR) which has had the 2T-B (or 2T-BR) engine replaced with a 2T-G engine.

What's that buzzing in my ear!
Yeah, I s'pose you could fit a 1GGTE in there, but it's gonna take a lot of work 'cos the engine bay on the TA27/RA25 series is shorter than the later RA23/28 series and you'll have to move the radiator forward or the firewall back or do some other fancy work. They have the same engine bay dimensions as the TA22. They also have the same underpinnings (steering, suspension, etc) as the TA22 series.
Simplest thing to do would be throw in a turb'd 18RG.
Assuming it's a TA27-MZ (or TA27-MZR) it weighs 975kg, which is pretty light and would go like the clappers with a worked 18RG in it. The heaviest model is the RA25-MQ (or RA25-MQR) with the 18R-G (or 18R-GR) engine, and they weigh 1050kg.
2T = 100hp
2T-B = 105hp
2T-BR = 100hp
2T-G = 115hp
2T-GR = 110hp
18R = 110hp
18R-G = 145hp
18R-GR = 140hp

Dunno much about Nissan, except IMHO the best looking cars they ever built were the 240Z (260Z is okay, but I prefer the 240Z) and the 180B-SSS.

I thought the 25 had roughly the same engine bay size as a 28, only shorter behind the wheel and longer in front of it. I think the overall bonet length is roughly the same. Toyota streached the engine bay in these and the 23/28 to accomodate the larger 18R engine.

I don't think the 25 has the same internal engine bay length as the 23/28 series. It's the size of the 22. However, next meeting we'll park your 28 next to the 25 and do a compare. Also, it'll be interesting to see other differences between them and I've never parked beside a 28 before. And, I bet you never parked beside a 25 also!
Any TA22 dudes out here that can verify that fitting a 1G into their car is more than a simple job?

Hi,
Yes, I remember that thread.
So, Gold28, it is do-able, but a lot of work. So I guess you could go the whole hog and do a massive re-engineering to this angry car and give it a 1G engine, or go the turb'd 18RG - which, would probably be easier.
