MA61 -steering noise (for norbie/ed/frank/glen/michaelB) Thu, 02 December 2004 02:22 Go to next message
Hey I have searched and found you fella's previous thread:

http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=40810&rid=&S=ee538826fa9e7b5f50f8389476f 4feeb&pl_view=&start=0#msg_365435

But Im hoping your experience with steering racks and seals will help me diagnose this problem:

My ma61 makes a whine/groan noise in the steering when it approaches full lock on either side (like when parking) but just recently has been doing it almost the whole time. I dont think it's leaking any oil (not enough to notice a puddle anyway) but it was smokin' hot here the past couple of days and maybe that was enough to cook the seals like it says in the above thread?

Im hoping I dont need my rack rebuilt but if i do can u recommend any shops that do it cheaply?

Also, can anyone recommend a decent but cheap exhaust shop to fit a quiet twin tip muffler to my beast - In sydney and preferably on the north side?

Cheers!

Damien.

have you actually checked the oil?
this can simply be caused by low oil......

as said above, low fluid or perhaps a worn slipping belt.

I've only done it twice Sad

and first time some fibreglass putty and a screw fixed everything (and the screw was not for a panelbeater as payment either Razz)

That's harsh. But at least all of his doors are the same colour !! Laughing

Back to the thread - either low oil, or a leak on the suction side of the pump.

Mine did Just what you're describing too Danz. Started off with just a bit of a groan at full lock, but slowly got worse. Eventually groaning the whole time. All I needed to do was top up the power steering fluid.

So yeah, in summary - what they all said already.

I was just speaking to a guy with a Mk3 last night who developed the same problem in the last couple of days. Must be something to do with the heat and those ridiculous "oil coolers" Supras use (ie bent piece of pipe). This is why I have a transmission cooler hooked up to my P/S now.

mine was low fluid..
at the moment I have NO cooling for my power steering lines
even the bent pipe is gone.. just 2 high pressure rubber pipe or whatever pipes
i should really do something about it

W00t! Its cool to see your name up like that Razz I've pissed off that pissy little bent pipe and I'm planning on running a Commodore auto transmission cooler. This ouught to help the rack live a long and happy life.

That said, as everyone else has said, the symptoms can probably be fixed by checking the fluid level.
