I get shocked every time I'm on the road in Melbourne, the drivers don't seem to comprehend road rules, or even understand what those white stripes on the road are for...
The amount of dangerous driving done in Melbourne outnumbers everywhere else I've been (in Australia at least).

drivers everywhere! not just you/melbourne
its just lack or care and attention.
there are lots of excuses, everyone can drive like that.
tired, angry, don't care, etc.
but you should, and its sad not to.
*mumbles*
I get to see it all the time on my short 10min journey to and from work every day, oh and to the shops etc.
just hope for the best, and hope they have insurance ^_^

I don't see why Vicroads don't make people sit a "refresher" test every year...that way more assholes would be off the road and they would get more funding..win win

oh yeah, I hear victorians are bad, well worse than western australians.
I was merging at one of those silly merge lanes RIGHT after traffic lights (like 10m) leaving 3m or so room infront of me to the next car.. cause I know drivers CANT merge for biscuits.
and this car powers past, jumps on the brakes, and shoves his way in.. so I jump on the horn.. then notice.. VICTORIAN NUMBERPLATES.
ahh well.
gotta keep the cool on the roads nowdays (:

I don't think it's because they don't know the rules. They just don't care about following them...
So a refresher won't solve a thing.

I freaking hate how un-courteous people are! Nobody will ever let you in!! And whats the deal with so many people coming out of their lane around corners? It's not like soft sweeping corners are tricky at 60Kph!!
I hate the way everyone thinks they will get to their destination faster if they split up accross all three lanes. THEN they travel PAINFULLY slowly up to 5km/h below the speed limit and just sit there. Like, HELLO! You're going so freekin' slow, why not all merge up to the left so those of us who know what WOT feels like can get to the speed limit in a timely fassion?

if I am WOT.. usually wouldn't take too much notice in rear view untill up to speed and not accelling anymore.. then change lanes 'when things settle down'
and let anyone/if anyone there past.

I don't think anyone knows about the keep left over 80km/h rule (see my previous post).
I'm also prittysure nobody knows that when 2 lanes merge, and the lines just disapear (ie, the left lane doesn't have to cross broken lines to merge up) the LEFT lane actualy has right of way. NOT THE RIGHT!
The rule regarding those striped, non-raised median strips are prittymuch ignored and I doubt anyone knows the rules regarding them. Everyone drives over them then some people get shitty with me when I cut them off as I follow the road rules. I mean, hello, you're breaking the law, fuckoff.

My point is I know what WOT is like, and if I can be at the front at the lights I usualy end up about 3-7 car lengths ahead. THAT'S no problem. However, if I'm not in the front, everyone drives like a Granny. That's their choice, but PULL THE HELL OVER TO THE LEFT LANE so that I can get to the limit quickly. Jeez.

here (perth) is not so bad really.. get let in sometimes always try and let people in.. its not like it slows you down any really. 70% of the people would give a wave of thanks or whatever.
though.. central city driving at peak hour is not so nice. hehe.

Hi,
I'm sure every city and country town has its quota of dickheads on the road. Sydney traffic sucks big-time, but the only area of Sydney I won't drive to is the Eastern suburbs. I have found the roads to be totally confusing out there and the drivers to be the most inconsiderate that I've met.
Many many years ago WC Fields (America comedian/actor of the 30's and 40's) got the shits with bad drivers (they were even around back then), and he went and bought twenty cars (some old 1930 looking black things) and he hired drivers and they drove in a line. When an asshole got in the way, or cut him off, or did something stupid in front of him - he didn't brake or giveway - he rammed them. He then got into the next car and proceeded along until it happened again. Within half a day he'd used up all his cars hitting inconsiderate assholes.
There's many a time when I wish I was driving an old Ford/Holden ute with massive bullbars instead of my Celica - especially at round-abouts. It'd be nice to whack into someone who is totally in the wrong. You get out and wipe their paint from your bullbar while they got a massive ding. Then, to show ultimate audacity, you call the cops on them also for being in the wrong.
That's why I hate large 4WD in the city. Most are driven by assholes and they know that someone like me in my piddly little Toyota isn't going to lock horns with them. Even if you're in the right it is little comfort when your car is banged up.

setsuna: i thought about driving to Perth in my old cressida..don't know if I'll make it thoe ... it's not just the way people drive or to say can't drive but it's also the way theres no courtesy or the way aggression is fought with aggression. I'm guilty of speeding up after i get pissed off on several occasions to get out of the path of some maniac, if only there was a solution that wasn't apart of the problem IE; rivers story of a gang of 20 cars policing the streets, haha thats a pisser...driving a car is like driving a balistic missle in a sense...the car can be a very destructive weapon, that plus road rage usually ads to temporally insanity...

Yeah, everyone loves the right hand lane in Melbourne. Nobody seems to realise that they'll get stuck at intersections behind people turning right, they just drive on oblivious.
I also hate the f###ers who cruise along at or under the limit in the right hand lane. There was a big debate about this in the 'Drive' section of the Age. A lot of the people who do it think that they are doing some kind of service- keeping speeds down or whatever. Just pisses everyone else off and causes more agro.
Lived in Brisbane for about a year and can't say that drivers were much better up there.
StuntDemon, you're spot on- most drivers don't realise their actions can have serious consequences, that their foolish/aggressive driving can be destructive. It's scary to think how much you have to trust other people on the road

What about those people who travel BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT!?! Or those that take off at the lights so slowly, that they start breaking for the next red light before they even get up to the speed limit?! Once again, if you wanna drive slowly, fine, but MAKE FREEKIN' WAY for those of us who AREN'T afraid of traveling at what hte govornment deems a safe speed.

From my experience:
* Sydney drivers are extremely agressive, but you have to be with that amount of traffic.
* Canberra drivers are all Sunday Drivers and have no idea about the road around them.
* Queensland drivers try to run you off the road.
* Melbourne drivers never let you in, don't seem to obey any road rules, and can't stay in their own lane.
Melbourne, by far, is the most dangerous place I've ever driven. I can imagine that Sydney can be quite a bit intimidating if you're not a local, but at least people let you in and stay in their own lane.

Nark: *sigh being a melbournian i can agree that were all nuts as far as responsibility in the road goes. What about the roads in sydney? i mean i hear there much smaller, the ones in Europe are lanes! and America..pfft boggles the mind the amount of layers the highways have there...so in hind sight as far as luxury goes melbournians are lucky to have nice (mostly) nice roads.
Stronger policing of stupid offenses like using a mobile whilst driving, using the emergency lane on a highway or median strip, swerving lanes and such... needs to be enforced this silly season, i was thinking of taking them to the Simpson desert in the back of a dippy van then leaving them there for a week with nothing but the clothes and a bottle of water. that would also help the obesity problem were having here mainly cause the fat people would be eaten first and thats if they survive the first night of the harsh climate....bit of a rant there
off the topic slightly...watch out! the pelicans are fighting back!! in Adelaide a pelican dropped a fish on some guys xf windscreen (proof that birds don't like fords )

having driven in 4 capital cities fairly regularly id have to say brisbane wins hands down , closely followed by sydney/melbourne in a tight comparison , then adelaide.
you think melbourne drivers are inconsiderate rude and dangerous - spend a weekend driving around brisbane ..
Those guys make Melbourne look sedate and calm on the road!

Yep. Sydney roads are heaps smaller. I grew up in Sydney though so I don't really find a problem with them. Driving around Canberra for the last two years though, I do notice the difference a lot when I go back to Sydney.
American had HUGE lanes and they always have shitloads of them, so you don't really notice bad drivers, there's always plenty of room between you and any other cars. I'd hate to see Americans drive in Sydney... hehe
Never been to Europe so I can't comment.
Drivers in Asia just don't obey rules, but I wouldn't consider it a bad thing. It's like if you're sitting at a red light and there is no one around, in Asia, people will just go.

i went to cambodia about 10 years ago and was riding on the back of a motorbike. They go forward in the right lanes like america.
I'm not sure if they have any official road laws back then. But turning left and a huge T intersection, which means getting in the right lane... We had to turn left into the left lane and drive thru oncoming traffic till we slowly merged/weaved pass a few oncoming other cars nad bikes before getting into the right lane. There is like one left lane and one right lane at about 10 metres wide each.
what a rush [well i was what 11?], and to think they did it everyday.

apparently french people are the worst drivers - if they want to get in, many will just give your car a gentle bump to let you know!
melb I've never had any troubles with, except 2 taxies nearly killing me within 2 minutes of each other - almost left skid marks for one of them (and I don't mean on the road) - but must say I'd also had 2 similar bowel-loosening experiences in sydney (thought I drive here a *lot* more often)

There is some camera footage here somewhere from when my mum was in france, when they park they leave their handbrake down and car out of gear and they just push cars out their way when parralel parking, watching them go under the arcda triumph is funny 4 lanes goes to 2 or something everyone guns it to get in front and just continue going 4 wide in 2 lanes. crazy buggers.
Adelaides cool specially in the work ute, coz i don't pay insurance and if some dumb rich biatch refuses to give way in his/her amg benz, i just go they soon stop or give way.
