xA6x Celica/Supra tailgate rust

I'm considering buying an MA61 supra, but the tailgate is very rusty. I was wondering what is involved in fixing that, as it really seems as there is too much to cut away and plate up. It is feasible to replace the tailgate? Is it much work, and does anyone have one without/very little rust. I don't know anything about this, so forgive me if I'm talking crap. Also, if there's any idea's that I've missed, please feel free to let me know
Thank you.

Yeah, whats humble's e-mail address? Its going to come a time when I need a new...ney, "reborn" tailgate for my Project Supra (when I can f'ing get it!).
And as far as engines go, you couldn't probably find a 5MGE (like kevz0r) or possibly even a 6MGE (3l).
Best person would be our resident Mk2 nutter, Norbie!

What about rust in the actual structual part of the boot (up the sides etc..). If there's heaps of rust there, is there anything that can be realistically done about it?
I hate rust... why couldn't these cars be more rust proof????????

fuck it! if theres rust in the body dont touch the thing im up to my 5th MK 2 and if the body is rusted there is no end to the amount you can find if the tailgate is heaps rusty it means water has been coming in for a long time and there will be rust in the back, you need to find one with only a little tailgate rust not alot. and the problem is not fixed by rustproofing the problem is that toyota used a dry seal for the back windscreen which is not very water tight (hence they all rust) if you find a good one make sure you get it sealed with that windscreen scholastic crap. Supras are awesome cars and i totaly recomend them but save your cash and get a good one otherwise you will waste alot of time and money fixing recuring rust places to look: under the rear flares (at the bottom) around the tail lights, at the bottom of the windscreen, at the top of the front pillars at the top of the rear pillars (under the tailgate) best of luck, hope you find a good one (ps dont put travelling out of the question

I'm looking at buying one towards the end of this year, going to get one with hopefully minor rust, then because I wont be driving it because I will have a different car (my Celica), I'm going to totally strip the body, change some of the things (I have a Celica XX rear bumper, and the wide tail lights). I'm going to fix any rust spots I find with the panels and stuff off, and see to them before they become a problem.
I went through, go to http://www.celicasupra.com and look at their buying guides and there is a guide to common rust spots.

Thanks bunny, It looks like I may have to travel if I want a good one then. There is a perfect one in car city in Ringwood/Vic, with it's original paint (i said resprayed in another post, but on closer inspection, it is original paint) without a touch of rust anywhere. It's done 130.000km's, had 1 owner, been garaged it's whole life. It looks like it's about 1-2 years old. THere's a couple of tiny scratches on the paint, but I didn't even notice them on my first look. The interiors perfect, even the little rubber bits in the engine bay, windows etc. are perfect. The car is perfect, except for being an auto (and $10,000)

yep a 5MGE or 6MGE will go in no problems. just plug in all the sensors (make sure u plug them ALL in) and away you go. no wiring, or ecu changes. great upgrade.
then turbo the sucker

No wiring or ECU changes?? That definitely wasn't my experience!
The 6M-GE upgrade is very easy as far as engine conversions go, but it's not quite "plug and play".

Kev was referring to the way he just plugged all the 5ME sensors into the 5MGE and ran/is running on the 5ME computer.

I know how you guys feel!!!
It's so amazing that almost all of them have the rust at the bottom of the windscreen.
I have mangged to find a dead set perfect tailgate for $150. Absolute bargain to replace mine. Just have to get it painted. Good luck trying to find one. Try celica spares, he may have a ra60 one you can drill out to ma61, but i know the guy is very expensive.

Has anyone thought about getting a tailgate made of fibreglass or something? Could it be done? Would solve all the problems we have with them seeming to rust away underneath us...
