What would you pay for a st185 GT4? (friend of mine wants to buy one) Mon, 06 December 2004 02:24 Go to next message
A friend of mine wants to buy an st185, and I want to help him. What are some baselines? 10-15k? Approx how much for a modded one?

Also, anything to look out for?

I cant really tell you much about prices except from 11k for an 89-90 to 14-15k for a 92-93 (these are stock btw) private sale

as far as what to look out for, firstly the clutch being an AWD people like the quick take offs and cause the clutch is the only weak point in the driveline its cops a hammering if the guy is a hoon...

If it has been modded i.e. FCD and Boost controller, if its been running anymore than 12psi on original head + gasket do a compression test as the higher boost levels if improperly monitored could have spiked in the past blowing the HG.

Check the exhaust for white smoke at idle and when driving as it could be blown turbo seals....infact when you drive it make sure boost comes on around 2.5k rpm a bit lower if a down pipe is fitted...

obviously do the usuall things...check the coolant for bubbles, milkiness or sediment, listen to driveline noises or any clunking coming from the rear diff when accelerating or changing gears (worn mounts). if you got time check plugs aswell to see how its been driven.

thats all i can think of atm.

Mostly depends on the mileage now for these cars and the engine\turbo's condition. Most turbo's will generally last for 12 to 15 years under factory conditions so most ST185s are now due for a rebuild. Try find out what has already been repaired on the car and by who.

Check the following:

Top the headlights and see if they are even.... very hard to align once in a accident

Wheel bearings for noise. Drive alongside a gutter and apply the brakes and listen for wear.

Rear Diff cushion - bunny hop the car in first gear and listen for a thud coming from the boot.

It the car has been lowered check the CVs as if not done properly they are placed under lots of stress.

See if it crunchs gears from first to second (syncros) and also from fifth back to forth (clutch or pressure plate) Driveline and engine labour for these cars = lots of hours which = lots of $$$.

The above are some signs to look out for when buying an ST185. Inspecting the engine is not as easy to do as you really need to get in there to get an idea. Not many people selling a car will let you start pulling it apart. Laughing

Good Luck

hey Puffy,

alot of good pointers there aswell...wheel bearings definitely....

the guy i bought mine off was accomodating enough to let me cehck the engine, but unless you appear serious they probably would object...

i told the bloke if it passes the things i was going to check i would buy it then and there...and i did Very Happy

That means one of two things. They have nothing to hide and the owner is confident of the cars condition or they are insulting your intelligence hoping you dont know what you are looking for.

Look out for any new toyota stickers on bumber supports etc. Thats an easy give away that the car has been in a acco with parts recently replaced...... After a while the guy at the car yard asked me nicely to leave Very Happy

Does whether it comes with interior goodes (sunroof, elec windows etc) affect the market value much? This one seems base level inside.

jap ones had all the fancy gadgetry like climate control + electric seats - more things to break IMHO

mine was bare basics Gt4 - which most aussie sopec ones are - but in return for less buttons and things that go whizz - i got a better turbo + widebody standard + the ability to insure it with out any " grey import " issues hanging over it
