Leakdown test results

hey, have had a leakdown test done on a car that i am looking to buy but the results are a bit troubling
a compression test was also done here are the results
1. 155psi / 80% leak
2. 135psi / 90%
3. 135psi / 85
4. 125psi / 95%
What should i make of this?
The mechanic told me that the engine probably needs a rebuild, especially if i want to crank a bit more power out of it
the engine is a 1.8 turbo, if your wondering.
Thanks

I was told 10percent or less leakdown is ok.
I don't understand why the highest leak down also had the highest compression though?
Those compression numbers look a bit varied also.

You may be reading that incorrectly there. According to the description of a Leakdown test on the link above, if the right guage reads 95%, then there's 95% leakdown (or 5% leakage). If you read you results again it would appear like so;
1. 20% leakage
2. 10% " "
3. 15% " "
4. 5% " "

Hmm, the guage i saw had on dial red green and yellow sections on it. it was something like 0-20% in yellow for "Good" 20-40% in green for "acceptable" 40-100% was in red.
Those percentages i put up there is the amount of air leaking out of the cylinder,ie 85% of the air being put in is leaking out. all the results were massively in the red section. i've talked to couple of mechanics since and it seems like the engine is pretty well worn out. Back to hunting for a new car
It's an import and the odo says 121,000k's but they guys i've spoken to reackon that with those compression/leak its more likely to be 220,000ks or more
Cheers,

compression is not a good indication in determining the age or lifespan of an engine.

Yeah? Can you elaborate more on this? I'm interested!
